Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The Blue Crabs carried a 10-4 mark against the Long Island Ducks this season into Friday night's series opener, in the first of a three-game set at Regency Furniture Stadium in front of 4,108 fans. The Ducks would reverse their losing trends here in Southern Maryland however, running to a 12-2 win, tying the largest margin of defeat this year for the Blue Crabs. The top of the first inning started with a bang for the Ducks, up against Blue Crabs starter John Koronka. The lefty and MLB vet made his home debut and first start for the Crabs, but allowed three hits and two walks in a four-run first. It was 1-0 Long Island after a Javier Colina RBI single, which was followed by a two-out, three-run homer (1) by Brendan Monaghan. Southern Maryland would respond though, on a Matt Craig RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. Right-hander Jake Dittler started for the Ducks. Craig chipped in another RBI on a single in the bottom of the third, trimming the Long Island lead in half at 4-2. Koronka would only last three innings, allowing four runs all earned, three hits, five walks and no strikeouts. A pair of Blue Crab errors and a wild pitch from reliever Chris Hayes in the fourth plated three Duck runs and the visitors took a 7-2 lead, which became 10-2 after a Ray Navarrete RBI single, a Matt Esquivel RBI double and an Erick Monzon sac-fly. With reliever Jason Waddell in the game for Southern Maryland in the seventh, Long Island pulled ahead by 10 runs on an RBI double from Matt Cavagnaro and an RBI groundout off the bat of Bridger Hunt. Dittler would end up tossing a complete game. Both runs were earned on seven hits, and Dittler struck out eight with four walks. The win improved the righty to 9-8, as Koronka dropped to 0-1. With the win, the Ducks improved to 3-5 at Regency Furniture Stadium this season, and are back over .500 overall at 53-52, with a 17-18 second half record. At 64-40, the first place Blue Crabs maintain the best overall record in the Atlantic League, and are 23-11 in the second half. The Blue Crabs will be back in action Saturday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, in game two of this three-game series against the Long Island Ducks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with LHP Randy Keisler (1-0, 8.10) on the mound for Long Island, against RHP Joe Newby (5-3, 2.14) for Southern Maryland.
