Newark Bears News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 9-1 on Friday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Kelvin Villa and Bill Pulsipher were both strong to start the ballgame. Villa retired the first six batters he faced and surrendered just one hit over his first three frames. Pulshiper scattered a pair of hits and got some help from his defense to keep the game scoreless over the same span.
Newark cracked the scoreboard in the fourth as Elijah Dukes, who finished the game 2-for-4, singled and came around to score on Bears' newcomer Sandy Madera's RBI triple to right. The Patriots came back in the home fourth off Villa as Josh Pressley drilled a two-out, two-run shot to left centerfield to put Somerset up 2-1.
The score remained the same until the home seventh inning as the Patriots sent 10 batters to the plate. With a runner on, Joe Burke flied a two-run home run down the right field line to push the lead to three runs and ended Villa's night. An error put a man on against reliever Will Cunnane and Wayne Lydon plated the runner to continue the frame. A walk and a Jeff Nettles' RBI single followed and the next batter, Pressley, clobbered his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, and it was 9-1 Somerset.
Pulsipher (3-0) notched the victory, surrendering just one run on five hits, with five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Pulsipher and reliever Jeff Kennard combined to retire ten straight Bears' batters at one point. Villa (2-6) was dealt the loss, firing six and one-third innings, allowing four runs on six hits, with five strikeouts.
