York Revolution News Release
(July 6, 2016, Bridgeport, Ct.) - The York Revolution avoided a sweep and grabbed their first win of the second half in convincing fashion with a 9-3 triumph over the Bridgeport Bluefish on Wednesday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Revs (41-32) will now continue their road trip to Sugar Land for a four-game series that begins on Thursday night, leading into the All-Star Break.
Scoreless through three, the Revs scored twice in the fourth to commence the offensive attack. Michael Burgess led off the inning with a double to deep right and scored when Andres Perez followed with a double to deep left for the game's first run. One batter later, Alfredo Marte bounced a single up the middle, plating Perez for a 2-0 lead.
The Revs batted around in the fifth, scoring four times to build a 6-0 lead. The rally started with one out as Jared Mitchell cracked a double off the fence in left-center, stole third, and scored when Joel Guzman chopped a single over the drawn-in infield and into left for his league-leading 51st RBI. Burgess then singled up the middle and Perez reached on an error to load the bases, before Kevin Rivers worked a walk to force in a run. Marte then drove in a run on a ground ball fumbled by Angelys Nina at shortstop for the second Bluefish error of the inning, and Josh Wilson capped the outburst with a sac fly to left.
Revs starter Micah Owings took a shutout into the fifth, but Bridgeport would score three times to cut York's lead in half. Luis Nunez led off with a double to left-center and scored with one out on a single up the middle by Rossmel Perez. A potential double play ball took a hop on Wilson at short, and after the error, Adron Chambers lined an RBI double to left and Endy Chavez brought home another run on a groundout, cutting York's lead to 6-3.
The Revs responded right away, however, as Burgess laced a two-out RBI double to right-center in the sixth, and Salvador Paniagua belted a two-run double to deep left in the seventh, providing the final margin.
Owings (3-3) picked up the win, tying a season-high with five innings while two of his three runs allowed were unearned. Michael Click handled a scoreless sixth, while Jose Arredondo entered for Ron Schreurs to leave the bases loaded in the seventh and toss a scoreless eighth inning. Scott Rice closed it out with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Revs defense turned a season-high four double plays in the win, all started by Wilson at shortstop with three of the four turned by Perez at second base.
Burgess led York's 13-hit attack with a 3-for-5 night, including two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. Mitchell, Marte, and Paniagua all tallied two hits apiece.
Bluefish starter Blake Beavan (3-3) took the loss, allowing six runs over five innings despite only three runs being earned.
Notes: Travis Witherspoon (1-for-5) has now hit safely in 16 of his first 19 games with York. Mitchell stole two bases, tying a Revs' season-best, and now has four steals in his first five games with York. Burgess' RBI was his 21st in just 24 games with York. Perez (1-for-5, double, RBI) is now 13-for-26 (.500) with eight extra-base hits and 10 RBI over his last six games. York lefty Frank Gailey (2-1, 2.68) faces Sugar Land southpaw Aaron Thompson (3-2, 3.59) in Thursday's opener at Constellation Field. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. EDT, and Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 7:45 p.m. EDT with Darrell Henry on the call.
