West Valley City, Utah - Forward Paul Caponigri scored the game-winning goal in the first period, and Matt Yeats stopped 21 shots for his first shutout of the season, as the Steelheads blanked the Utah Grizzlies, 2-0, on Friday night at the E-Center.

The Steelheads (36-20-7) are now nine points ahead of the Grizzlies (32-24-6) for third place in the West division, while improving to 5-1-1 against their closest division rival. Tonight was the last meeting of the regular season between the two clubs. The win also allows the Steelheads to move to a season-high, 16 games over .500, with just nine games left in their 72-game schedule.

Caponigri gave the Steelheads the lead at 13:55 of the first period on a play that started in the neutral zone. Winger Scott Burt took a feed from David Bararuk and moved into the zone on the right side. Burt raced down to the bottom of the circles before sliding a pass out to Caponigri, who flipped the puck over goaltender Alfie Michaud (27 saves) for his 11th of the year. The even-strength goal was his fourth with the Steelheads and his first in the last 12 games.

There was no scoring in the second period. Through two periods the shots were 22-12 in favor of the Steelheads.

Steelheads' center Dan Hacker sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:50 of the third period. D'Arcy McConvey got the only assist on Hacker's 10th of the season.

The final shots were 29-21 in favor of the victors, as the Steelheads won for the 19th time on the road this season. Yeats jumps to 18-7-4, while Michaud suffers his 10th loss.

The Steelheads wrap up their series with the Stockton Thunder on Saturday, March 18 from Qwest Arena in Boise. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
