Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and San Diego Gulls battled on St.Patrick's Day in game two of the series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. It was a four-leaf clover finish as the total number of goals scored in the game (4) leaned the way of the Salmon Kings, and they defeated the Gulls 3-1.
San Diego struck first and scored the only goal of the first period. At 14:16 Winger Bobby Cunningham scored his 8th goal of the season, firing the puck into a crowded crease and getting a favourable rebound off a Salmon Kings defender.
In the second frame, Victoria tied the game 1-1 at 6:47. Victoria native Steve Roberts posted his eighth goal of the season, finishing off a leading pass to the net from Rookie Adam Taylor. Taylor crashed the right boards just beyond the blue line and shovelled the puck to Roberts for the score.
Just 17 seconds later, Victoria took the lead 2-1 with Seth Leonard's eighth goal of the season. Tyler Shybunka won the face off to Ryan Wade who carried the puck into the San Diego zone. Wade found Leonard alone in the slot and Leonard beat Goaltender Mike Mole top shelf for the game winner.
The game remained 2-1 for the Salmon Kings until San Diego pulled their goalie, and with 25 seconds left in regulation, Roberts earned his second goal of the game, targeting the open Gulls net from behind the Victoria blue line.
Victoria was 0-4 on the power play and shut out San Diego on all four of their attempts with the man advantage. McVicar was awarded his 10th win of the season and Mole was handed his 28th loss. Victoria out shot San Diego 33-31.
