Binghamton, NY- The Hartford Yard Goats scored single runs in each of the first four innings, and got a solid start from Chris McMahon and four relievers, and defeated the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 4-3 on Friday night at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, New York. McMahon went the first five innings and Evan Justice, Fineas Del Bonta-Smith, Stephen Jones and Dugan Darnell fired four scoreless, helping the Yard Goats win their second one-run game. Jack Blomgren led off the game with a home run and Yanquiel Fernandez homered, his fourth in eight games since getting promoted to the Eastern League.
Infielder Jack Blomgren led off the game with a home run off Binghamton starter Junior Santos giving the Yard Goats a 1-0 lead. It was Hartford's first leadoff homer this season and Blomgren's third in 14 games. The Yard Goats made it 2-0 in the second inning on Drew Romo's sacrifice fly which scored Kyle Datres. The Rumble Ponies scored their first run in the second inning on an infield grounder to make it 2-1.
The Yard Goats added a run in the third inning as Yanquiel Fernandez blasted a line drive homer over the fence in left field and it was 3-1. It was the 20-year old's second straight homer game and third in four contests. Hartford added on again in the fourth inning with a two-out rally with three consecutive singles. Julio Carreras got it started and Braxton Fulford followed. Blomgren then cracked an RBI single into left field, scoring Carreras, giving the Yard Goats a 4-1 lead.
Yard Goats starter Chris McMahon allowed just one run over the first four innings but was reached for a pair of solo homers in the fifth inning (Jaylen Palmer & Jose Peroza). He departed after five full innings with a 4-3 lead.
The Yard Goats bullpen was spectacular and put together four shutout innings to hold the one-run lead. Justice and Del Bonta-Smith worked a perfect sixth and seventh. Jones pitched around a single in the eighth and Darnell worked around a single and a walk in the ninth for the save.
The Yard Goats continue the series in Binghamton on Saturday night at 6:07 PM. RHP Nick Garcia will pitch for the Yard Goats and RHP Jose Chacin will pitch for the Rumble Ponies.
