Indianapolis Indians News Release

MOOSIC, Pa. -- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and the Yankees' bullpen withstood a late Indianapolis Indians rally to claim a hard-fought 8-6 victory over the Tribe on Monday night at PNC Field.

With the loss, Indianapolis' record falls to 35-30 on the season, while the win improves Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to 37-28. The victory also gives the Yankees a 6-1 season-series edge over the Tribe after Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has now won the first three contests played at PNC Field following a 3-1 series win at Victory Field in mid-May.

After claiming two victories despite scoring only six total runs in the first two games of a four-game set against Indianapolis, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs on four hits in the first inning.

With one out in the first frame, LF Colin Curtis started the Yankees' offensive outburst with a single to left field and was promptly plated one batter later on a line drive double to center field by SS Eduardo Nunez to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the 1-0 lead.

After a strikeout accounted for the second out of the inning, Nunez then stole second and was driven home on a single by 3B Jorge Vazquez before C Jesus Montero capped the first inning scoring with an RBI double to give the Yankees the 3-0 advantage.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense tacked on a single run in the second inning on a two-out base knock by Curtis, before adding two more runs in the home half of the third to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

1B Juan Miranda kicked off the third inning with double to center field and then trotted home one pitch later when Vazquez blasted the first offering of his second at-bat to deep left field for a two-run home run and a six-run Yankee lead.

Indians' 2B Jim Negrych got the Tribe on the board in the top half of the fourth inning with his first career Triple-A home run to cut the Indians' deficit to 6-1.

However, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre quickly regained its six-run cushion when RF Reid Gorecki led off the bottom of the frame with a triple and then scored one batter later on a single by Curtis to up the Yankees' lead to 7-1.

The Indians wouldn't go down without a fight, though, as sandwiched around a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre run in the sixth, Indianapolis rallied to score three runs in its half of the sixth and two more in the eighth to cut the Yankees' lead to 8-6.

LF Kevin Melillo led off the top of the sixth with a double to center field and touched home when the next Indians' batter, Negrych, singled on a ground ball to center. Then, with Negrych standing at second base with two outs in the inning, 1B Jeff Clement stepped to the plate and, on a 1-2 count, blasted the fourth pitch of his at-bat out to deep center field for a two-run home run to cut the Indians' deficit to 8-4.

The Tribe scored their final two runs of the evening on back-to-back RBI groundouts by DH Brian Myrow and 3B Pedro Alvarez in the eighth inning. Melillo started the frame with a single to center and moved to third on a two-bagger by Negrych to set up the consecutive run-scoring outs and cut the Yankees' lead to 8-6.

Yankees' RHP Romulo Sanchez (5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO) earned his second win of the 2010 season against his former team after striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings of work. RHP Mark Melancon (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 SO) earned his sixth save of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings of work out of the Yankees' bullpen after the two previous Scranton/Wilkes-Barre relievers combined to allow three runs in 1.2 innings of relief.

Indians' RHP Mike Crotta (3.1 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 SO) was saddled with his fourth loss of the season after allowing 11 hits and a season-high tying seven earned runs in 3.1 IP on the evening. In two starts against the Yankees this season, the Tribe right-hander has now allowed 14 runs on 23 hits in 8.1 innings of work to account for a 15.12 ERA against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In a game that featured 14 total runs and 25 combined hits, two Indianapolis batters - Melillo (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B) and Negrych (3-for-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI) - recorded multiple hits on the evening, while three Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hitters - Curtis (4-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI), Nunez (3-for-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI) and Montero (3-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI) tallied at least three base knocks in the contest.

The Indians look to avoid a four-game sweep as they take on the Yankees in the final game of the four-game set on Tuesday, June 15 at 7:05 p.m. RHP Daniel McCutchen is expected to get the call for Indianapolis, while RHP Ivan Nova is the probable starter for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
