G-Braves Start Homestand with Win over Durham, 7-2

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Norfolk Tides 7-2 on Monday night at Coolray Field. Atlanta Braves RHP Jair Jurrjens made a MLB rehab start for the G-Braves - his first appearance on the mound since he suffered a left hamstring strain in an April 30th start. Jurrjens pitched 2.2 innings and struck out 4 and walked 4. Gwinnett's offense had 10 hits on the night, 5 of them coming in the bottom of the 8th inning. Gwinnett (29-35) is now in second place in the International League South and 9.5 games behind Durham (39-26).

It Was Over When: In the bottom of the 8th inning and the score tied 2-2, Gwinnett was able to score 5 runs on 5 hits, both tying season-highs in an inning, making the score 7-2.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Jurrjens allowed 2 R/ER on 5 hits. He faced 16 batters and 10 of them reached base. Jurrjens threw 66 pitches - 39 for strikes. Michael Dunn (2-0) earned the victory, striking out 1 in the final 1.2 innings.

At the plate: Second baseman Joe Thurston went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI. Shortstop Luis Bolivar went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Right fielder Mitch Jones went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Jeremy Hellickson struck out 5 in his 6 innings of work. Joe Bateman had his first blown save of the season, allowing the run that tied the game in the 7th inning. Dale Thayer (0-1) was credited with the loss, allowing 5 R/ER on 5 hits in 1.0 IP.

At the plate: Center fielder Desmond Jennings went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Right fielder Matt Joyce went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

On Deck: Gwinnett faces off against Durham in the final game of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. LHP Heath Phillips is scheduled to start tomorrow for the Bulls. No starter has been announced for Gwinnett.
