Fort Mill, S.C. - On Monday night the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were defeated 4-2 by the Charlotte Knights. Leonard Davis hit a home run for the third time in two days while the Chiefs snapped a three game winning streak.
Syracuse (37-26) scored in the first inning after Boomer Whiting and Pete Orr both reached to start the game. Whiting stole second and had advanced to third on Orr's bunt single. Kevin Mench then lofted a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed Whiting to score.
Charlotte (28-37) answered right back in the bottom half of the inning off of Chiefs starter Matt Chico. With Danny Lucy on first, Dayan Viciedo hit a two-run home run to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.
Chico took the loss going six innings and striking out six while walking just one. He gave up six hits and four runs, all of which were earned.
The Knights scored again in the sixth when Tyler Flowers, who had hit a solo home run in the first game of the series, hit a two-run home run to give Charlotte a 4-1 lead.
In the seventh, Leonard Davis would chip away at the Knights advantage with a solo home run. It wash his fourth home run with Syracuse after he hit five to begin the year with Double-A Harrisburg. The score was 4-2 after seven.
In the eighth the Chiefs got one runner on base. That was Justin Maxwell who reached on a two out double, but Chris Duncan grounded out in the following at bat. Syracuse did not have a runner reach base in the ninth.
A combination of four Charlotte pitchers combined to defeat Syracuse. Starter Lucas Harrell got the win pitching six innings and striking out one while walking four. He was followed by Jhonny Nuñez, Erick Threets, and Greg Aquino who pitched the ninth for his seventh save of the season.
On Tuesday night, the Chiefs and Knights will play the final game of their four game set. Jeff Mandel (2-2, 4.13) is scheduled to start for Syracuse and Carlos Torres (4-5, 3.46) is set to pitch for Charlotte. First pitch is at 7:15.
