Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

After dominating the first two games of its series with Indianapolis with pitching, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees pounded out a season-high 17 hits in Monday night's 8-6 victory.

The Yankees started the hit parade early, with four base hits in the first inning.

With one out in the inning, Colin Curtis picked up his first of four hits on the night with a single to center. Eduardo Nunez was up next and, with Curtis going on a 3-2 count, doubled to center to drive in the Yankees' first run of the game.

Nunez would finish the night 3-5, adding another double and a triple later in the game.

With two outs in the inning, Jorge Vazquez singled to drive in Nunez-his first hit at the Triple-A level-and then scored from first on a Jesus Montero double.

Vazquez picked up his second hit at Triple-A an inning later, hitting a towering, two-run homerun just inside the leftfield foul pole to put the Yankees up 6-0.

"He's a guy that capable of hitting the ball out of the ballpark," Yankees manager Dave Miley said."The plan out of Spring Training was that he was going to be right where he was tonight, but unfortunately, with the appendectomy, it took him a while to get going. But he fits very nicely into the middle of our order."

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would score at least once in the first four innings of the game-the first time all season that it had scored in four consecutive innings-and held a 7-1 lead.

Romulo Sanchez started the game for the Yankees and was cruising early, tossing a perfect game through 3 1/3 innings and striking out four straight batters at one point.

But the Yankees' righty would start to struggle later in the outing, allowing two runs in the sixth inning to see Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's lead fall to 7-3.

Indianapolis would add another run before the inning was over with Jeff Clement taking Royce Ring deep over the centerfield wall for a homerun.

The Indians pitchers were able to cool off the Yankees' offense late in the game, striking out eight batters over the final nine outs of the game.

While the Yankees were struggling at the plate, the Indians continued to add runs to the board.

The team scored two quick runs in the top of the eighth to make the score 8-6, and the damage could have been worse had it not been for a great play by Reegie Corona.

Indianapolis designated hitter Brian Myrow hit what looked to be a sure base hit to right field before Corona ranged far to his left and delivered an off-balance throw to reliever Zack Segovia who was covering first base to just get Myrow.

"We could talk about a play probably every night by Reeige," Miley said. "That's a big out right there. If that ball gets through or we can't get him at first base, we've got nobody out and there's two guys on. So that was a huge play."

The teams meet in the final game of the series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Former Yankees' prospect Daniel McCutchen will get the start for Indianapolis, while Ivan Nova will take the hill for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre looking to continue his hot June.
