Staten Island Yankees News Release
[Staten Island, NY] - Benitez-Martinez. Clemens-Piazza. DeSalvo and Wilson? The thing that those names have in common is the spark that ignited brawls between the Yankees their cross-town rivals.
Matt DeSalvo hit Andy Wilson in the head in the sixth inning, sparking a bench-clearing brawl, leading to 11 ejections between the two teams.
DeSalvo, Melky Cabrera, Carlos Rosario, Alexander Santa and Brad Blackwell all were ejected from the game from Staten Island, while Wilson, Rashad Parker, Ender Chavez, Shawn Bowman, Joe Orloski and Robert Paulk were sent away from the Cyclones.
With the Yankees down 2-0, DeSalvo's first pitch to Wilson drilled him in the back of the helmet. Wilson went down, only to spring back up again, slam and shatter his helmet on the ground and headed for DeSalvo. The brawl followed, clearing the benches.
Twenty-eight minutes later, after all settled, the two sides resumed play. The Yankees managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an Adam Shorts double and a Luis Robles single to knot the score at two.
The Cyclones put the game away in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs off of relief pitcher Jeff Karstens, capped by a two-run home run by Jesus Linares.
The Baby Bombers travel to Aberdeen to face the IronBirds this weekend. They will return home on Monday.
