Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- Jeff Mackor singled hom Edwin Maysonet in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Tri-City ValleyCats a 2-1 victory over the Vermont Expos Thursday night in New York-Penn League action at Bruno Stadium.
Maysonet was reliever Chris Little's first batter faced in the seventh inning and reached on a walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved Maysonet to second, he scored on Mackor's RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The Expos got back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the eighth from Franklyn Jimenez and Kory Casto, but the rally was squelched when Casto was picked off first base for the second out. Salomon Manriquez then grounded out with Jimenez on third to end the inning. The Expos went 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Carlos Caceres got a spot start out of the bullpen for the Expos and made the most of the opportunity. He allowed just one run on four hits over six innings with two walks and two strikeouts. The only run he gave up came in the third inning on a walk, groundout and RBI single from Josh Anderson.
Former University of Vermont pitcher Jamie Merchant got a no-decision after allowing just one run on five hits over six innings with two walks and six strikeouts. Vermont's only run of the game came from the first two batters of the game. Jason Tuttle led off the contest with a single, stole second and then scored on a Jimenez single.
But the Expos would get just three more hits off Merchant. Vermont's best chance to score again came in the sixth when Tuttle led off with a single and stole second just before a one-out walk to Casto. But with two runners on, Merchant struckout Josh Whitesell and Manriquez back-to-back to end the threat.
Little (0-1) took the loss, allowing the winning run in the seventh inning as he and Caceres combined to hold Tri-City (16-13) to just five hits in the game. Rodrigo Escobar (2-1) gave up three hits and struckout two over the final three innings for the victory.
Tuttle was 2-for-2 with one run and two steals, while Jimenez and Oscar Bernazard both had two of Vermont's eight hits in the game. The Expos were held to just one run for the eighth time this season and for the fourth time on the 1-5 six-game roadtrip.
The Expos (5-25) will open a three-game homestand with the Oneonta Tigers on Friday night at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 p.m. It is Cabot Creamery Night at the ballpark and there will be Mini-Bat Pom-Poms for the first 1,200 fans through the turnstiles starting at 5:30 p.m.
