Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Fishkill, NY --- One night after the Hudson Valley Renegades and Aberdeen IronBirds combined to score just three runs in fourteen innings, the two teams tallied 22 runs between them in two seven-inning ballgames tonight at Dutchess Stadium. It was the visiting IronBirds who got the best of this doubleheader, winning both games by the same score of 6-5.
In the opener, the 'Gades rallied from a 6-5 deficit heading into the bottom of the 7th with two runs, but DH John Jaso, representing the tying run, was thrown out at the plate by Aberdeen SS Brian Bass. Jaso was attempting to add a third run onto RF Matt Rico's two-run double. Starter Joe Coppinger (W, 3-2, 2.39) struck out six batters in five innings to earn the victory. Jason Cierlik picked up his second save. 'Gades starting pitcher Tony Peguero (L, 3-3, 2.64) gave up five hits, a walk and two earned runs while striking out eight in five innings work. Rico led the Renegades offense with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Jaso also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. For the IronBirds, C Morgan Clendenin went two for three with two RBI and a run scored; RF Val Majewski was two for four with an RBI and two runs scored; and 1B Chad Boudon was one for two with two RBI.
The nightcap was a back-and-forth affair that saw six lead changes in seven innings. Tied 5-5 going with two out and no one on in the top of the 7th inning, the IronBirds put runners on first and second. C Brian Bock then singled to center, scoring 2B Eric Grimm with the game-winning run. Aberdeen reliever Chris Osentowski (W, 1-1, 5.17) allowed just one hit over the last 1 2/3 innings to earn the win. Antonio Perez (L, 3-3, 6.00), who entered the game following an apparent injury to Chad Orvella, took the loss. 3B Kris Dufner keyed the 'Gades attack with a two-run home run in the third inning. LF Josh Kendrick doubled twice and drove in a run. DH Val Majewski led Aberdeen with a single, triple and two RBI. SS Brian Bass had a solo homer in the second inning.
The Diamond in a Haystack Contest, sponsored by Belizzi Jewelers, took place after the nightcap. 163 women searched through piles of hay on the infield searching for jewelry boxes, one of which contains the ticket to the grand prize, a $3,500 one-karat diamond.
The Renegades and IronBirds conclude their four-game series tomorrow night at Dutchess Stadium. Adam Loewen (0-1, 2.70), the #4 overall pick in the 2002 draft, starts for Aberdeen against Aaron Gangi (1-0, 2.35) of Hudson Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:11 p.m. Tomorrow is Rascal Bobblehead Night, sponsored by Modell's Sporting Goods and Mix97. The first 3,000 fans through the gates will receive the third in the collection of Renegades mascots bobbleheads.
