Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - Florence Y'alls (26-37), presented by Thomas More Stadium, fought hard in a back-and-forth battle with the Québec Capitales (39-23), but ultimately fell 6-5 to clinch a series loss at Thomas More Stadium on Thursday.
In the closest game of the series, Florence fell behind early to Québec. The Capitales plated a first inning run when second baseman David Glaude hit a two-out RBI single that scored designated hitter Ruben Castro from second base. In the third inning, Québec extended its lead against Florence and starter Jake McMahill (5.2 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) when shortstop Kyle Crowl hit a two-out RBI single to score right fielder Justin Gideon.
Trailing 2-0, the Y'alls' offense came to life in the middle innings. In the fourth, third baseman Brian Fuentes led off with a solo home run against Capitales' starter Harley Gollert (4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K). In the fifth, Florence grabbed its first lead of the game. After a one-out hit batter and a single from designated hitter Tristin Garcia, Québec brought in righthander Cal McAninch, who allowed a three-run homer to Brian Fuentes. Fuentes' second homer of the day was his third of the series and propelled the Y'alls in front 4-2.
Québec answered with a sixth inning run on a bases-loaded passed ball, but Florence and lefthander Kent Klyman emerged from the half-inning with a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Florence grabbed the momentum back with a two-out RBI single off the bat of first baseman Brennan Price.
Down 5-3, Québec began its comeback versus the Y'alls bullpen. The Capitales pulled to within one in the seventh after Klyman walked back-to-back hitters to begin the inning. A two-out RBI double from David Glaude scored one, but Kyle Crowl's fly ball to Ray Zuberer turned into a 7-2 double play that ended the inning with the Y'alls in front 5-4.
In the eighth, the Capitales landed their final and crushing blow against Y'alls righthander Brian McKenna. After a one-out infield single from left fielder Tommy Seidl, Ruben Castro came to the plate two batters later and smacked a two-run home run to right. The blast gave Québec a 6-5 lead, and the Y'alls could not rally. Florence left the tying run at second base in the ninth en route to a series defeat.
The Y'alls begin the second half of their six-game homestand on Friday, July 28th. Florence faces Schaumburg for the first time at Thomas More Stadium in a three-game set. Game 1 from Florence is scheduled for July 28th at 7:03 p.m. ET.
