Boise Hawks News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - Roberto Ortiz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting the Yakima Bears to a 6-5 victory over the Boise Hawks, before 2,379 fans at County Stadium.
The loss, coupled with a Spokane 11-4 win over Tri-City, drops Boise a game and a half behind the Indians in the East Division race with just two games left. Spokane can clinch the first-half title by winning two of their final three games.
Mike Freeman led off the decisive frame with an infield single and moved to second on a bunt base-hit by Westly Moss. With two outs, Raoul Torrez was hit by an Aaron Kurcz fastball to load the bases, with the next pitch to Ortiz hitting him in the shoulder, giving the hosts the victory.
Boise jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Jesus Morelli two-run double, but Yakima tied the game with single runs in the second and third. The Hawks would push the lead to 5-2 in the sixth, with a Chris Huseby two-run double capping the frame, but an error on Richard Jones proved large in the bottom of the frame, leading to two unearned runs - as the Bears tied the score on a Jhoan Pimentel double.
Matt Szczur and Morelli each had two hits for the Hawks in the loss, who dropped a third game in a row for the first time this season. Szczur extended his hit streak to 16, with Jones logging a double to extend his streak to 12. Andres Quezada was solid in relief, throwing two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief - extending his scoreless inning streak to 14 frames.
Yazy Arbelo went 2-for-4 with two doubles and Pimentel went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win for the Bears.
Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night, with Juan Serrano going for the Hawks against Miguel Pena at 6:35 p.m. (PT)
