Yakima Bears News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - Miguel Pena took a no-hitter deep into the sixth inning but didn't factor into the decision as the Yakima Bears (17-20) toppled the Boise Hawks (19-18) 8-2 in front of 1,403 fans at County Stadium Sunday evening.
Neither club had a hit until Roberto Ortiz doubled down the left field line with one out in the last of the fourth inning. One batter later Zach Walters drove him in on a bouncing ball up the middle to score the game's first run.
Boise spoiled Pena's no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth on back-to-back singles followed by a Richard Jones two-run triple off the wall in center to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
The Bears responded right back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by Raywilly Gomez and Henry Zabala RBI singles to give Yakima a 4-2 edge.
The Bears then took advantage of a wild Boise bullpen, sending ten men to the plate to tally four insurance runs on five walks and two doubles in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to six.
Greg Robinson (5-2) pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings in relief to notch his league-leading fifth victory of the season. Marcos Perez (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits in two innings to suffer the loss.
Pena tossed 5 2/3 strong innings for the Bears, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking four.
Ortiz finished the night 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and a stolen base. Walters went 2-for-3 as well with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
The Bears have now won 11 out of their last 14 games at home.
Yakima and Boise will meet for the first-half finale Monday night at 7:05. Enrique Burgos (0-0, 6.53 ERA) is slated to start for the Bears against Matt Loosen (0-0, 4.15 ERA) for the Hawks.
