Hawks Lose Control of Playoff Fate

YAKIMA, Wash. - Raywilly Gomez lined an RBI single in a three-run sixth inning, helping the Yakima Bears to a key 8-2 victory over the Boise Hawks before 1,403 fans at County Stadium.
With their fourth-straight loss, the Hawks first-half pennant hopes are now out of their hands, as Tri-City must defeat Spokane later tonight in Game 2 of their doubleheader (Tri-City won Game 1, 10-3), and defeat the Indians tomorrow - with Boise needing a win in the series finale in Yakima to clinch the title.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a RBI single from Zach Walters, but Boise came back. Pierre LePage broke up Miguel Pena's no-hit bid with a two-out single in the sixth, followed by a Matt Szczur single. Richard Jones then hit a two-run triple off the centerfield wall to give the Hawks a lead.
Yakima would rally in the sixth off Marcos Perez, tying the game on a Roberto Ortiz double - with Mike Freeman scoring on an error by Kyung-Min Na. Gomez would add a two-out RBI single to make it 3-2, with Henry Zabala adding an RBI single to cap the frame.
The Bears would add four insurance runs in the eighth, taking advantage of five walks, with Yazy Arbelo rapping an RBI double and Raoul Torrez lining a two-run double.
Game 3 of the series is tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. (MT) with Matt Loosen meeting Henry Burgos.
NOTE - Szczur extended his hit streak to 17 and Jones to 13 with their sixth inning hits.
