Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY - The Sioux City Explorers defeated the St. Joe Blacksnakes 13-7, Saturday night here at Lewis and Clark Park. The win gives Sioux City their 28th win of the year, opposed to 26 losses. The loss drops the âSnakes to 30-24 on the season. The Xs and âSnakes are tied for the American Association North Division lead in the second half.
Both teams got on the board early, often, and didn't slow down throughout the game. St. Joe jumped out front early, scoring twice in the top of the first. The Xs responded by crossing four in the home half of the second. The âSnakes drew within one in the top of the third, and added three more in the fourth, to take a 6-4 lead. Sioux City would battle back, plating three in the bottom of the fifth and two in the last of the sixth, for a 9-6 lead. The Xs would add insurance runs in the seventh (1) and eighth (3) to put the game out of reach.
Mike Richardson (3-4), Jorge Moreno (3-4), Ryan Gripp (3-5), and Dan Meier (2-4) led the Xs offense. Catcher Chris Grossman was 1-4, but that one hit sailed well over the left-center field wall for his fifth home run of the year. Richardson picked up his sixth home run of the year in the seventh inning, taking Matt Johnson deep over the left-field wall. Meier drove in three runs, with Gripp and Grossman each pushing across two. Richardson, Moreno, JJ Burress and Zack Pace would each add one RBI to their season totals.
Mike Nunes (4-2) came in to relieve Sioux City starter Trevor Marcotte, and picked up his second win of the year. Nunes pitched three innings, scattering three hits, walking one and striking out one. St. Joe starter Evan Thomas (4-6) took his sixth loss of the year, throwing six innings, allowing ten hits, nine runs - only five of which were earned - walking two, and striking out four.
Sioux City and St. Joe will finish their four game series Sunday night, with first pitch slated for 5:05 p.m. The starter for the Xs will be Tom Lipari (6-2), and taking the mound for the âSnakes will be Mark Nussbeck (4-2). The game will end a seven game home stand and start a seven game road trip (@ Lincoln 7/10-13, @ St. Joe 7/14-16). Tickets for any home game can be purchased online at www.xsbaseball.com, via the phone at 277-WINS, or at the box office at Lewis and Clark Park.
