Canaries swept in doubleheader

Robstown, TX - The Coastal Bend Aviators (4-1) swept the Sioux Falls Canaries (2-3) in Saturday's doubleheader. Coastal Bend won game one 6-3 and prevailed 12-11 in 11 innings in game number two.

In game one, the Aviators got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Ruiz drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Brian Fryer. Fryer stole second base to put two runners in scoring position for Rodney Medina. Medina grounded out, but Ruiz was able to score for a 1-0 lead. Fryer stole third base and scored on a groundout by Matt Creighton. After one inning the Aviators led, 2-0.

The Canaries cut into the lead in the second inning. John Schmitz singled and scored on a single by Chris Weber to make it a 2-1 game.

The Birds tied the game in the third. Ralph Santana reached on a single, and got to second base when centerfielder Ryan Ruiz overran the ball. Angelo Fermin followed with a bunt that was thrown away at third base by pitcher Brandon Pollo. The errant throw allowed Santana to score and tie the game, 2-2.

Coastal Bend regained the lead in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch by Alex Perez allowed Ruiz to score for a 3-2 lead. Andy Wilson took the very next pitch out of the ballpark for a three-run homer to give the Aviators a 6-2 lead.

Abner Arroyo hit his ninth home run of the year in the fifth inning to make it a 6-3 game, but the Canaries would get no closer in the game one loss.

In game one, Brandon Pollo (1-3) picked up the win and B.J. Litchfield recorded his first save of the season for Coastal Bend. Alex Perez (0-2) took the loss.

Game two started with the Canaries getting an early lead. Ralph Santana and Chad Hermansen singled to put two runners on base for Abner Arroyo. Arroyo singled to score Santana for a 1-0 lead. After Dennis Anderson walked to load the bases, John Schmitz hit a groundball to the first baseman. Bryon Smith's throw home was high, allowing Chad Hermansen to score for a 2-0 lead. Abner Arroyo scored on a groundout by Chris Hall and the Canaries led 3-0 after the first inning.

The Canaries broadened their lead in the fourth. Arroyo drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0. Dennis Anderson followed with a triple to clear the bases and put the Birds in front, 7-0. Finally, Anderson scored on a wild pitch for an 8-0 lead.

Coastal Bend blasted their way back into the game in the fourth inning. Matt Creighton got on with a double and the bases were loaded after Bryon Smith and Andy Wilson walked. Jack Joffrion was hit by a pitch to score Creighton and make it 8-1. Ryan Russ grounded into a fielder's choice to score Smith for an 8-2 score. After Ryan Ruiz walked, Mike Pinto went to the bullpen and brought in Matt Petrusek. Petrusek gave up a grand slam to Brian Fryer to cut the Birds lead to 8-6.

The Aviators took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Stephen Morales and Matt Creighton reached on singles. Bryon Smith laid a bunt down the first base line that Abner Arroyo threw away at third allowing two runs to score and tie the game 8-8. Andy Wilson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Smith to third base, and Jack Joffrion singled to score Smith for a 9-8 lead. Ryan Russ reached on an error by Chris Hall and an error by Angelo Fermin allowed Russ to second and Joffrion to third. A wild pitch allowed Joffrion to score and give the Aviators a 10-8 lead. When David Hoffman overthrew the plate Russ tried to score but Chris Hall recovered to throw out Russ and end the inning.

The Birds rallied to tie the game in the seventh. Dennis Anderson singled and John Schmitz doubled to put the tying ruins on. After Chris Weber was hit by a pitch, Jason Sugden walked to score Anderson and make it 10-9. Ralph Santana grounded into a fielder's choice to score Schmitz and tie the game, 10-10.

The Canaries took the lead in the eighth. Anderson singled and Schmitz doubled to bring him home and give the Canaries an 11-10 lead.

The Aviators tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Fryer singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Stephen Morales. Fryer's run tied the game, 11-11.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the eleventh when Jack Joffrion singled to score Bryon Smith for the game winning run.

J.R. Pickens (6-3) got the game two win and Lenny Bays (1-2) suffered the game two loss for the Canaries.
