Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans announced today that ESPN broadcaster and Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan is expected to talk about Rusty Begnaud and his swimming accident during ESPN's Game of the Week on Sunday, July 9. The Game of the Week is the Houston Astros vs. the St. Louis Cardinals starting at 7:05 p.m. Central Time on ESPN. Check your local cable service provider for the correct station.

Beguand broke his neck in a swimming accident on June 20, 2006, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. After spending nearly two weeks at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, Begnaud was moved to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the best spinal-cord injury treatment centers in the country.

The Pelicans continue to spread the word about Begnuad's accident and raise money to contribute to the Rusty Begnaud Benefit Account that was set-up to assist the family with expenses. In total, there has been nearly $15,000 raised for the account.

Besides the Pelicans, the other teams in the American Association that have held fund-raisers include the St. Paul Saints, Coastal Bend Aviators, Fort Worth Cats, St. Joe Blacksnakes, El Paso Diablos, Shreveport Sports, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers, and the Lincoln Saltdogs.

Fan can still contribute to the account at any local Peoples First Community Bank or by calling 1-800-807-7227 to wire the money if a person is out of town.

* Rusty Begnaud Update - * Rusty reached a milestone. The doctors replaced the halo with a semi-soft collar, which allows him with easier movement for rehabilitation. He is much more comfortable without it and another step to getting on the road to more independence. He does sit in his wheelchair for at least 2 hours each day. He is making progress and he will generally sit up a little longer each day as he gets stronger. His spirits remain good.
