An Ugly Night for 'Snakes in Loss to Explorers

Sioux City, IA-The Blacksnakes (4-2, 30-24) pounded out 15 hits and scored seven runs, but were knocked around again by Sioux City (4-2, 28-26), 13-7. It was an ugly game that saw a combined 29 hits, seven errors, three hit batters and a critical catcher's interference call.

St. Joe struck first with a pair in the first on Wil Quintana's two-run single. After Sioux City took the lead with four runs-two earned because of a catcher's interference that erased a play that would have ended the inning-in the second St. Joe got one back in the third before taking the lead in the fourth.

Ben Thomas gave St. Joe a 5-4 lead with a two-run home run. The next three batters each singled with Terrell Merriman driving in Jake Whitesides to make it 6-4.

But the Explorers took the lead for good, 7-6, by scoring three times in the fifth, with the first two hitters in the inning reaching on a walk and hit batter. They then put it away by scoring six times over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before St. Joe plated a meaningless ninth inning run.

The first five 'Snakes hitters combined for 13 hits, with Scooter Jordan, Jake Whitesides, Wil Quintana and Terrell Merriman each getting three hits. But the pitching faltered, and in the series has allowed a combined three-game total of 34 runs on 46 hits.

The 'Snakes need a bounce-back performance in the finale to salvage a series split with the Explorers. Mark Nussbeck (4-2) is the man to the hill for St. Joe against left-hander Tom Lipari (6-2) for the X's. Game time is 5:05pm from Lewis and Clark Park, with the webcast starting at 4:45pm at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
