X's Explode for Twenty-One Runs on Independence Day

Sioux City, IA- The Sioux City Explorers exploded for 21 runs on Monday night, blowing out the RedHawks 21-9 on Independence Day at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park. Explorers had twenty-one runs scored on twenty-two hits.

The Sioux City Explorers recorded three runs in the first inning, five in the second, four in the third, one in both the fourth and sixth innings, and seven huge runs in the eighth to give them an incredible 21 runs on the contest.

Fargo-Moorhead plated nine runs total on the night, scoring a run in the first and sixth inning, four runs in the seventh inning, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth but would not come close to competing with the X's offensive extravaganza.

Explorers had twenty-one runs scored on twenty-two hits, with five hitters having career nights at the plate. Leadoff hitter Derrick Robinson went 5 for 6 with five runs scored.

Shortstop Nate Samson went 4 for 4 with five RBIs, four runs scored and a two-run homer in the bottom half of the third.

X's right fielder Michael Lang recorded three hits an RBI and two runs scored. Matty Johnson had two hits while knocking in four runs.

X's first and third baseman Matt Koch knocked in a run in the second with an RBI single and in the eighth, Koch cranked a bases-clearing grand slam, giving him five runs batted in on the contest. Sioux City's left-hander Cody Forsythe (3-3) received the victory, allowing six runs, on eleven hits and two walks in seven innings. RedHawks starter Will Mathis (0-2) was charged with the loss, giving up thirteen runs (11 earned) in only 3.2 innings pitched.

The Sioux City Explorers improved to an even 22-22 record, putting them back at the .500 mark on the season.

Sioux City and Fargo-Moorhead will play game two of their three game series on Tuesday (July 5th) at 7:00 at Mercy Field at Lewis and Clark Park.
