Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - Matt Chavez drove in a season-high four, helping to lead the Wichita Wingnuts to a 7-1 series-opening victory over the Laredo Lemurs Monday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
After a scoreless first inning on both sides, Wichita (26-16) grabbed the lead in the second. Martin Medina opened the inning with a double, and was brought in one batter later when Chavez collected a double of his own. Harrison Kain added another two-bagger later in the frame, doubling the Wingnuts advantage.
Chavez was at it again in the third, battling Joe Testa (1-1) for a lengthy at-bat that went 14 pitches. On the 14th pitch, the first baseman launched a three-run shot to left, putting Wichita in front 5-0.
The margin was pushed to sixth in the next frame, as Kain hit a solo shot for his second long ball in his last three games.
The six-run lead was more than enough for Tim Brown (5-2), who cruised for much of the night. The veteran righty blanked Laredo (26-18) over his seven frames, yielding five hits and one walk for his third straight quality start and victory.
The Lemurs lone run came in the eighth against the Wingnuts bullpen, but Wichita responded in the home half, as T.J. Mittelstaedt doubled home Brent Clevlen.
The win is Wichita's fourth straight and 20th in their last 25 games. It also gives the Wingnuts sole possession of first place in the American Association South Division.
The Wingnuts and Lemurs continue their three-game set Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Righty Alex Boshers (3-3, 3.99) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Laredo will counter with fellow right-hander Ryan Beckman (3-4, 2.74) First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
