Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
PITTSBURGH, FEB. 14, 2006 -- Eric Mobley, a 6' 11" center who starred for the University of Pittsburgh before becoming a 1st Round NBA draft pick in 1994, will make his debut with the ABA's Pittsburgh Xplosion tonight when the team faces the league-leading Indiana Alley Cats at Mellon Arena at 7 p.m. The Xplosion today announced the signing of Mobley, who played three seasons for the Pitt Panthers, averaging 10.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game during his Pitt career, including 13.7 points and 8.8 rebounds in his final collegiate year.
After being selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1st Round of the 1994 NBA draft, as the 18th pick overall, Mobley played three years in the NBA with the Bucks and the Vancouver Grizzlies. In the NBA, Mobley was a starter at times for the Bucks in his rookie season. Overall, he averaged 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in his NBA career, while making 54% of his shot attempts.
Mobley played for the University of Pittsburgh from 1991-1994. He was named to the All Big East Third Team in the 1993-94 season and had 14 points and 7 rebounds in Pitt's loss to Utah in the NCAA Tournament for the 1992-1993 season. Mobley, 35, was born in the Bronx, N.Y. He starred for Salesian High School in New Rochelle, N.Y. before his Pitt career.
"Adding Eric Mobley to a lineup that already includes ABA All Star Armon Giliam and other strong players bolsters our inside game and gives the Xplosion even greater depth as our team prepares for the ABA playoffs in March," said Freddie Lewis, majority owner and general manager of the Pittsburgh Xplosion. "By signing Eric, we're putting some true 'Pitt' into the Pittsburgh Xplosion."
The Xplosion (16-10) face a major test tonight against Indiana, which leads the ABA with a record of 23-2. The Xplosion are in second place in the ABA's Freddie Lewis Division, trailing only Indiana. Fans buying tickets at Mellon Arena tonight can Buy One, Get One free for Valentine's Day.
