February 14, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Birmingham Magicians News Release
Birmingham, AL....Birmingham's ABA team, The Magicians, announced today the signing of several new players. The new players were signed to replace several players who recently left the team to play overseas. The Magician's ABA all-star, center, Derrick Russell, signed a deal to play in Venezuela. Guard, Mike Dean, the team's leading scorer signed a deal to play in Poland and forward, Reggie Warren, also signed a deal to play in Venezuela. Guard Justin Johnson and forward Lionel Davis were released by the team. "We are always happy when guys can get deals overseas to further their professional careers and earn more money", head coach Jim Farmer said. "The other side is that we lost some of best players."
The Magicians, currently third in the Moses Malone/Marvin Barnes Division behind Florida and Atlanta are currently in position to earn a wild card birth in the upcoming ABA playoffs. "We feel very good about the new players we just signed. We are probably the most athletic team in the ABA right now and most of the new guys are experienced playing professional basketball at this level," Farmer added. "I'm excited to see what we can do in the playoffs."
The new players signed by the Magicians are Charles Ward, 6'6 guard, St. Augustine College, Marcus Austin, 6-9 forward, Villanova, Sylvester Morgan, 6-10 center, Georgia State, Tyree Jones, 6'0 guard, Eastern Oregon, Calvin Morris, 6-6 forward, Tennessee State and Jamie Sowers 6-7, forward, Wichita State.
The Magicians play their final home game of the season this Thursday, Feb. 16th at Jefferson State Community College at 7 p.m. against the number one ranked ABA team, the Indiana Alley Cats featuring former Auburn stars, Mack McGadney and Lincoln Glass.
