THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia eked past Charleston 5-4 in ten innings on Tuesday night. The RiverDogs plated a run against Alex McRae in the third on two hits, but the Power rallied back with four runs in the top of the fourth, keyed by doubles from Jerrick Suiter and Pablo Reyes. Charleston got two back in the sixth and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth. In the tenth, Cole Tucker walked, stole second and scored on a Suiter single to left. Jose Regalado was charged with a blown save before vulturing the win. Junior Lopez worked a four batter tenth for his fifth save. The win guaranteed that West Virginia will finish the first half of the season with a winning record.
BATTLE FOR CHARLIE BEST: The Charleston RiverDogs lead the all-time series with the West Virginia Power 35-28 with two games remaining between the clubs this season. West Virginia and Charleston split a four game series at Appalachian Power Park in May. Since 2005, the Power have gone 14-20 at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in South Carolina. West Virginia and Charleston do not meet in the second half of the season.
ALL-STAR CHANGES: Chase Simpson was added to the South Atlantic League's Northern Division squad for Tuesday's All-Star Game at Asheville's McCormick Field. Simpson replaces Carlos Tocci, who was promoted from Lakewood to Clearwater. The Power's Elvis Escobar was originally tabbed as a utility outfielder, but will now start in Tocci's place. Pitchers Yeudy Garcia and Junior Lopez were also selected to participate in the mid-season classic.
EXTRA INNING EFFORT: Tuesday's win pushed the Power's record to 6-1 in extra inning games this season. The Hickory Crawdads are the only team in the league that has not lost this season in extras (6-0), while Augusta is the only team that has played more extra inning games in 2015, going 3-6 in bonus baseball games.
SUITER STOUT: Jerrick Suiter has driven in 14 runs over 20 games since being activated off the Power Disabled List on May 25. Only seven players in the South Atlantic League have driven in more over that span.
BLOWN CHANCES: Jose Regalado was charged with a blown save in Tuesday night's ten inning win; the sixth blown save by the Power bullpen this season. The SAL average to this point this season is seven blown saves with Augusta suffering a league-high 16. Greensboro has only blown four saves despite having the league's worst record.
ELIMINATION GAME: West Virginia was knocked out of first half contention with their loss on Monday coupled with Hickory's win. Should Hickory win the second half crown as well, the second playoff spot would go to the Northern Division team with the next best overall record for the entire 2015 season.
SACRIFICES MADE: Sacrifice bunts have been a key part of West Virginia's offense through the first 65 games of the season. The Power have laid down 45 total sacrifice bunts this season, the most in affiliated baseball.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 19 & 20: On Friday the Power will have a Black Bear giveaway to the first 1,000 fans presented by MVB plus an appearance by the Pirate Parrot thanks to Suddenlink and Root Sports. June 20 is West Virginia Day at Appalachian Power Park with a New River Gorge Replica giveaway to the first 1,000 fans presented by Appalachian Power. Both nights will feature postgame fireworks.
POWER POINTS: The Power are now 19-14 at home, but have lost seven of ten at home this month. The club still has eight home games remaining in June... Austin Coley's win on Sunday was his team-best eighth win of the season, surpassing the seven wins that Cody Dickson and Buddy Borden had to lead the Power in all of 2014.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh shutout the Chicago White Sox for the second straight day, winning 3-0. Charlie Morton earned the win and Mark Melancon picked up his 21st save... Indianapolis beat Durham 3-2 in ten innings. Jaff Decker hit a walk-off homer to win it... Altoona fell at Akron 5-4 in 14 innings... Bradenton lost 2-1 to the Tampa Yankees. Barrett Barnes first inning home run was the only support for the Marauders.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App.
Adam Marco will call the action once again and will be joined by Mike Baggerman when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
