Lexington Legends News Release
The Augusta GreenJackets wiped out an early six-run deficit, and scored in the bottom of the 11th inning for an 8-7 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday night in Augusta.
Each team scored a run in the first inning. Singles by Alfredo Escalera and Ryan O'Hearn put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the first, and Escalera came home on a ground out by Elier Hernandez.
The GreenJackets evened the score in the bottom half when Cristian Paulino singled with one out, stole second base and scored on a base hit by Jonah Arenado.
The Legends took a 3-1 lead in the third. Humberto Arteaga reached first on an error by Arenado at third base, and Escalera followed with a single, moving Arteaga to second. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance to second and third, and Arteaga scored when Hernandez grounded out to shortstop.
Lexington extended its lead with four runs in the fourth. Brandon Downes drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. After Chad Johnson walked, Logan Davis sacrificed the runners to second and third, and both scored on a triple by Arteaga. Escalera popped out to first base, but O'Hearn hit his league-leading 16th home run of the year, and second in two nights, to give the Legends a 7-1 lead.
Augusta began its comeback with three runs in the sixth inning, including a leadoff home run by Aramis Garcia. The GreenJackets scored another in the eighth on a double by Arenado, a balk and a ground out by Skyler Ewing. They tied the game with two runs in the ninth. With one out, Ryan Jones singled and with two outs, Paulino and Garcia were hit by pitches, loading the bases. Arenado's two-run single evened the score at 7-7.
With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Johneshwy Fargas reached first on a throwing error by Arteaga, the shortstop. Fargas went to second on a ground out by Paulino and scored the winning run on a single by Jared Deacon.
Carlos Diaz (1-1) who worked two and two-thirds innings in relief, got the win. Jake Newberry, (1-2), who entered the game with one out in the 11th, was the losing pitcher.
Each team has won one game in the series, which concludes Thursday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
