Greenville Drive News Release
Greensboro, NC - Wednesday afternoon's game in Greensboro was a fast-paced affair, lasting just two hours and six minutes, and the Greensboro Grasshoppers defended their home turf with a 4-2 win over the Greenville Drive thanks to a two-run bottom of the eighth.
The Drive (35-31) now sit a half-game behind Savannah in the Southern Division standings and await the results of tonight's Asheville-Savannah game to see if they end up back in a first-place tie or a full game behind.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Drive manager Darren Fenster sent Rafael Devers to bat for a pinch-hit appearance, and the move paid off, as Devers crushed a solo homer to right to tie the game. The home run was Devers' fourth of the season.
The Grasshoppers (29-37) answered right back in the bottom of the eighth to grab the lead for good. With runners on first and second, K.J. Woods smacked an RBI double to right-center off Mario Alcantara (2-1) to put Greensboro ahead 3-2. Austen Smith followed with a groundout to plate their fourth run of the game.
C.J. Robinson (1-1) got the win for Greensboro after allowing just one run over two and two-third innings of relief.
Jeffry Fernandez gave the Drive a quality start, hurling six innings and allowing six hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts. The only two runs he allowed came on solo homers by Smith and Rony Cabrera.
Derek Miller tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single that scored Mauricio Dubon, who singled and stole second. Miller led the Greenville offense with three hits, and Dubon added two of his own.
Cabrera paced Greensboro with a three-hit afternoon, and Justin Twine picked up a pair of hits.
The Drive will start RH Michael Kopech (2-5, 3.10) on Thursday night as they look to avoid being swept in the three-game series. RH Jordan Holloway (0-1, 11.25) is scheduled to start for the Grasshoppers, with first pitch in Greensboro set for 7:00 PM.
