THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Rome 11-6 on Wednesday afternoon. The Power held leads of 1-0 and 4-3, but the Braves countered for advantages of 3-1, 5-4 and 6-5. In the top of the ninth with two down, Wyatt Mathisen reached on an error that allowed Harold Ramirez to score the game tying run. Francisco Diaz reached on an error that allowed Danny Collins to score the go-ahead run. After Chris Diaz reached on a third straight Rome error, Elvis Escobar doubled in two and Justin Maffei singled in another to cap the comeback. Yhonathan Barrios notched the win with two innings of relief work. Colby Holmes took the loss after allowing all six runs in the ninth.
HOP TO IT: West Virginia opens its second of three series this season at Greensboro's NewBridge Bank Park. The Power and Grasshoppers have met 125 times since 2005 and West Virginia holds a 68-57 mark in the all-time series. The Power are 32-31 all-time in Greensboro, including three one-run losses over four games earlier this month. West Virginia lost finals of 8-7, 3-2 and 2-1 in Greensboro from May 2-5 and won 5-4 on May 3.
RALLY TIME TALES: The Power's victory Wednesday was their sixth come from behind win this season. The club also notched its second win of the season when trailing after six complete. West Virginia was down 5-4 after six, tied the game in the top of the seventh, allowed a go-ahead run in the home half of the inning and then won it with the six run top of the ninth.
HERE AND GONE: Kawika Emsley-Pai was transferred back to West Virginia's roster today by Pittsburgh after spending 10 days with the Altoona Curve. The catcher went hitless in three games over 12 plate appearances with four walks and two runs scored in his first career stint in Double-A. Emsley-Pai batted .185 over ten games for the Power this season from April 29 - May 16. To clear a roster spot, Pittsburgh transferred Francisco Diaz to the Jamestown roster for the second time this season. Diaz is batting .211 for West Virginia with one home run and four batted in.
SEVENTEEN: Reese McGuire's hitting streak has reach seventeen games after an eighth inning bunt single on Tuesday. The 19-year-old's streak is the longest active run in the South Atlantic League. It is also the second longest streak by a Power player since the affiliation with the Pittsburgh Pirates began in 2009. Starling Marte hit safely in 22 straight games from July 9 to August 9, 2009.
MYLES BACK: Candon Myles was activated from the Power Disabled List on Wednesday. Myles was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 20. The outfielder has played in 32 games for West Virginia this season and is batting .208 with no home runs and six runs batted in.
WALK-OFF WOES: West Virginia's loss on Tuesday was the fourth time this season the club has lost in the last half inning of a game. The Power also lost on Opening Day in walk-off fashion, though the game was actually completed on Friday, April 4, rather than April 3. The Power also lost in walk-off fashion on April 29 in game one of a doubleheader at Kannapolis and on May 13 Greenville. West Virginia does not have a walk-off win this year.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 3: West Virginia hosts Kannapolis at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, June 3. It is the first of two "Bark in the Park" games at Appalachian Power Park this season. Dogs are admitted free without a ticket.
POWER POINTS: Adam Landecker was transferred to the Jamestown roster to clear a roster spot for Candon Myles... On Monday, Justin Maffei became the third player to drive in four runs during a game this season... Tuesday's loss was the Power 14th defeat by one run this season, by far the most in the South Atlantic League. West Virginia is 7-14 in one-run games this season. No other club in the league has played more than 16 one-run games this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was blanked 5-0 by the New York Mets Wednesday and travel to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers tonight... Indianapolis edged Buffalo 5-2... Altoona's game at Richmond was suspended in the fifth and play reumes today at Richmond before the regularly scheduled game... Bradenton blanked Tampa 3-0. Tyler Glasnow, Robby Rowland and Josh Smith worked the two-hit shutout.
