Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Greensboro, NC)- The West Virginia Power lost 3-1 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday evening. The Grasshoppers plated two late runs to edge the Power in the first of this four-game set.
West Virginia struck first with a run in the second inning. Edwin Espinal reached on his first of three singles in the game and moved to third on a Wyatt Mathisen double. Espinal scored on a ground out by Chris Diaz to stake Power starter Dovydas Neverauskas to a 1-0 edge. That lead held until the fourth when Greensboro evened the score on a run-scoring single by Felix Munoz.
Neverauskas worked six complete innings for the first time in his professional career, allowing just the one run on five hits while striking out two. Neither he nor Greensboro starting pitcher Max Garner factored in the decision.
In the seventh, the Grasshoppers scored two runs again Power starter Jared Lakind (0-1). With two down, Cody Keefer tripled and scored on a single by Rehiner Cordova, who then scored one batter later on a base hit by Javier Lopez.
West Virginia loaded the bases in the eighth, but could not plate any additional runs against the Greensboro bullpen. Josh Easley (2-2) worked the seventh and was the benefactor of the run support to notch the win. Sean Donatello pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
West Virginia and Greensboro continue this series on Friday evening at 7:05 pm. Shane Carle is the scheduled starter for the Power against the Hoppers Ryan Newell at NewBridge Bank Park. West Virginia returns home on Monday, June 2, to host the Kannapolis Intimidators.
