Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Boston Red Sox scout Rob English, who helped mold the likes of Adam Wainwright, John Rocker, Brandon Moss, Josh Reddick and Charleston Southern's R. J. Swindle, will be enshrined in the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame on Friday, August 1, prior to the Charleston RiverDogs game against the Hagerstown Suns at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
This will be the seventh year of honoring pro scouts, with the selections announced by The Goldklang Group, owners of the Charleston RiverDogs.
"I am truly excited and honored by this recognition," said English. "And I'm excited about returning to Charleston, a city that I have always loved to visit."
"The honor of inducting scouts that have given their lives to this profession and the game of baseball remains a tremendous privilege," said Tyler Tumminia, Senior Vice President of The Goldklang Group. "Over the past several years the SHOF has transformed from an idea into an initiative that is widely lauded within the industry. We are proud to continue this tradition of celebrating the careers of these deserving and distinguished scouts."
Criteria for induction includes a minimum of 20 years of pro scouting experience, with selection based on a combination of quantifiable success in the field, contributions made to the game in other areas of the sport whether professional or amateur, and importantly, their involvement and dedication to the local community that is honoring them through induction.
English was a long-time scout for the Atlanta Braves (1991-2001). He now scouts part-time for the Boston Red Sox after a decade of scouting full-time for the organization (2002-12), focusing primarily on the state of Georgia and surrounding areas. English had previously coached for Briarcliff High School (1970-80) and Brookwood High School (1980-90), in the Peach State. He is also an inductee of the Georgia High School Dugout Coaches Hall of Fame and the Gwinnett County Dugout Club Coaches' Hall of Fame.
"Recognition for scouts is way overdue," English added. "In the old days, we really beat the bushes to find quality players, and we dug and scraped to find them. We didn't have the Internet and access to all of the information that is available today. The advancements are good, but we as scouts still have to see the player."
English has signed a number of major leaguers, many of which came from the low rounds. Among his signees are Wainwright, Rocker and Swindle. He also inked Blaine Boyer, Josh Burrus, Tom Cochran, Kyle Davies, Brian Digby, Nick Green, Richard Lewis, George Lombard, Macay McBride, Matt Murton, Andrew Pinckney, Jason Place, Jason Shiell, Hunter Strickland, Aaron Taylor and Shannon Wilkerson.
