Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Lakewood, NJ - The Delmarva Shorebirds kickstarted an important seven-game road trip with a 4-3 win over Lakewood. In the series opener, Delmarva (31-22) battled back for a close victory with closer Jimmy Yacabonis earning his league-best 13th save.

In their first trip to New Jersey of the year, the Shorebirds fell behind in the third inning. Deivi Grullon led off with a double that kicked off the third base bag over Drew Dosch. Jiandido Tromp then bunted for a single. Grullon scored on a wild pitch, and Tromp made it 2-0 when Carlos Tocci delivered a sacrifice fly.

Drew Anderson was humming along for Lakewood until the fourth inning. The BlueClaws' starter retired the first nine batters of the game, but he walked Mike Yastrzemski to jumpstart the fourth. After a hit by pitch, Trey Mancini chopped an RBI single up the middle to cut the Lakewood lead to 2-1.

Mancini pushed Delmarva ahead in the fifth inning. Anderson hit Jeff Kemp again and walked another batter to load the bases for the Shorebirds' first baseman. Mancini lined another single to center, scoring two runs to give Delmarva the 3-2 lead.

A key insurance run in the seventh proved crucial for Delmarva. Mike Yastrzemski went from first to third base on a passed ball, setting up a sacrifice fly by Jeff Kemp. Lakewood got one back in the bottom of the seventh when Mitch Walding scored on a bunt by Tocci, cutting the Shorebirds lead back to one run.

Up 4-3, Delmarva went to closer Jimmy Yacabonis in the eighth inning. The six-out save started off shaky with a leadoff walk; however, a double play grounder erased the Lakewood baserunner. In the ninth, Yacabonis struck out the side in order to seal his 13th save of the season.

Luis Gonzalez earned his first win as a Shorebird, going 5 2/3 innings in the start. The left-hander allowed two runs on four hits, while Austin Urban pitched well in relief, stranding the tying on second base in the sixth. Drew Anderson dropped to 3-4 with the defeat for Lakewood.

With the victory, Delmarva pulls 31-22 on the year, having won 8 of their last 9 games. Hagerstown and Kannapolis were postponed due to rain in North Carolina, so the Shorebirds pulled to 5 1/2 games back in the South Atlantic League Northern Division.

The Shorebirds and BlueClaws will be back at it on Friday evening. Delmarva turns to Hunter Harvey (2-3, 1.89) in game two against right-hander Ranfi Casimiro (2-4, 5.40). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
