THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 9-3 to Savannah on Wednesday. The Power took a 1-0 lead on Wyatt Mathisen's second inning home run; his third overall and first at Appalachian Power Park. Justin Maffei scored in the third on a ground out to put West Virginia ahead 2-0. The Sand Gnats tied the game against West Virginia starter Justin Topa in the fifth and plated six in the sixth inning against the Power bullpen. Each team scored once in the seventh to close the scoring. Jerry Mulderig took the loss for the Power after allowing five runs on three hits over two-thirds of an inning. Mathisen, JaCoby Jones and Reese McGuire had two hits each in the loss.
WELCOME BACK: The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated outfielder Harold Ramirez from West Virginia's Disabled List. Ramirez, the 9th best prospect in the system according to Baseball America, appeared in four games at the outset of the season before suffering a hamstring injury on April 6 in the sixth inning at Lexington. The club also lost outfielder and prospect Barrett Barnes with a hamstring injury in that same inning. Barnes remains out of action.
NO-SEE-UMS MUCH THIS YEAR: West Virginia continues its series with Savannah tonight. The Power and Sand Gnats met 10 times during 2013 and West Virginia won the season series 6-4. Since 2005, the Power and Gnats have only played 45 times, with West Virginia owning the all-time lead 26-19. This meeting in Charleston marks the only set this season between the clubs. The Power are 14-8 in 22 games against the reigning league champion at Appalachian Power Park.
FRANSOSO TRANSFERRED: To clear a spot on the active roster for Harold Ramirez, Pittsburgh has transferred Michael Fransoso to the Jamestown Jammers roster. Over 22 games this season, Fransoso was batting .215 and the infielder had appeared in 13 games playing the outfield for West Virginia.
SIX TOO MANY: The six runs allowed in the sixth on Wednesday were the most surrendered in any one inning this season by the Power pitching staff. The previous single inning high was four runs scored in the top of the ninth by Kannapolis on April 21.
FIVE ALIVE: Edwin Espinal has the team's longest active hitting streak, entering play Thursday at five games. It is Espinal's second longest streak this season, having hit safely in eight straight from April 14-25.
ON POINT: Reese McGuire has thrown out 12 of 28 would-be base stealers against him this season, good for 43% of attempts. McGuire, however, has not appeared in enough games at catcher to qualify among the position leaders. A catcher must play in half of the team's games to statistically qualify for the category. Due to a seven day stint on the disabled list, McGuire has only caught 14 of West Virginia's 32 games.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 9: West Virginia hosts Savannah at 7:05 pm on Friday night. The first 1,000 fans through the gates at 6 will receive a 10th season commemorative pennant. The Power will wear disco-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit charity.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is the only team in the league that has not played an extra inning game this season... The next road trip includes stops in Greenville and Augusta. The Power went 6-1 against the Drive last year and have not played the GreenJackets since the middle of July during the 2012 season... The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned pitcher Phil Irwin back to Indianapolis on Wednesday. Irwin was recalled on Tuesday and did not pitched during his two-day stint on the roster.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh held off San Francisco 4-3 after taking a 4-1 lead after two. Gerrit Cole notched the win as the Buccos took two of three from the Giants... Indianapolis lost 3-1 at Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre. Gregory Polanco drove in the lone run for the Indians... Altoona walked off with a 6-5 win over Bowie on a Mel Rojas, Jr. single that plated Andy Vasquez... Bradenton scored four in the ninth for a 6-5 walk off win over Charlotte.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Adam Marco will call the action for all 140 games and will be joined by Jake Corrigan when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
