THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost 3-2 in walk-off fashion on Sunday afternoon at Savannah. The Power took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an error and three consecutive singles by Josh Bell, Stetson Allie, and Eric Wood. The Sand Gnats plated a run against West Virginia starter John Kuchno in the third inning, but Kuchno and the bullpen staved off Savannah until the eighth when the Gnats tied the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Bryton Trepagnier hit Kevin Plawecki with a pitch. Jeff Glenn reached on a shattered-bat single to move the winning run to second. Cole Frenzel followed with a single to left that brought home Plawecki to end the game.
ANOTHER CLOSE ONE: Sunday's loss was the first time that West Virginia lost in walk-off fashion this season. The 2012 edition of the club went 3-10 during games decided in the final at bat. The Power are also now 1-4 in one-run games this season. West Virginia has played in 162 one-run games since becoming a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in 2009, having gone 75-87 in those games. Only the 2010 club had a winning record, going 21-18 in one-run games.
SEE YOU LATER SAVANNAH: The Power lead the all-time series with the Sand Gnats 20-17, but have lost the first three games of this series and now hold an 8-10 record at Grayson Stadium since 2005. These teams will meet seven more times this season including six in the second half, three of which will be played in Charleston.
SWAT THE SWEEP: West Virginia is in danger of being swept for the second time this year. The Charleston RiverDogs pulled off a three-game sweep during the opening homestand this season, but the Power have managed to stave off any four-game sweeps since late in the first half last year. Hickory took four straight during a series from May 31 through June 3, 2012, at L.P. Frans Stadium.
OUT LIKE A LAMB: The Power have already won more games this April than they did last year, but have fallen seven times in their last ten games this month with one contest to go. The 2013 Power have a .264 batting average and a 4.87 ERA. The 2012 club went 8-16 in April with a .279 team batting average and a staff ERA of 5.80.
LIGHTENING QUICK: Saturday's defeat in Savannah was completed in one hour and 57 minutes and ranks as the fourth shortest nine inning game in West Virginia Power history. On September 3, 2012, Zack Von Rosenberg pitched a complete game in a 4-1 Power win over Delmarva in one hour and 52 minutes. West Virginia beat Kannapolis 3-1 at Appalachian Power Park on May 16, 2005, in a game that lasted one hour and 53 minutes. The third shortest game occurred on July 15, 2007, in Greensboro as the Power fell 5-2 to the Grasshoppers in one hour and 54 minutes.
OVER/ UNDER: West Virginia has not won a game this season when scoring fewer than six runs. The Power are now 0-12 when scoring five or less in any games this season.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 18: The Power will host their annual WVU night on May 18 against Lexington. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a Geno Smith bobblehead. All fans will have the chance to meet and greet Kevin Jones, Truck Bryant, and Da'Sean Butler. WVU Night is present by the WV Army National Guard.
POWER POINTS: Max Moroff's on-base streak was halted at 19 games after an 0-4 Sunday. The streak began on the second day of the season and the Power shortstop had an on-base percentage of .371 during the 19 game stretch... No West Virginia player has a hitting streak longer than three games entering play tonight... The Power staff ERA is under 5.00 on consecutive days for the first time this season... West Virginia's current three-game losing streak is their third three game skid this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh blanked St. Louis 9-0 to take over first place in the NL Central. The Pirates are 15-10 and travel to Milwaukee for a two game series starting tonight... Indianapolis beat Gwinnett 5-2... Altoona bested Erie 3-1. Charlie Morton earned the win in a rehab appearance... Bradenton beat Brevard County 4-1. Nick Kingham struck out a Marauders record 13 batters in the victory.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, and online at wvpower.com. Adam Marco will call the action for all 140 games this season and will be joined by Mike Baggerman when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
