Games #25 (10-14) - Away Game #14 (7-7)
LHP Jefferson Olacio (1-3, 9.00) vs. RHP Vicente Campos (0-0, 6.00)
Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) will attempt to salvage the series against the RiverDogs (A, Yankees) after dropping the first three games in Charleston. Kannapolis has equaled a season-worst skid, losing four in a row and 10 of 13 since opening the season 7-4. The Intimidators (10-14) rank fifth in the SAL Northern, 4.0 games behind first-place Hickory (14-10). Charleston (3-10) is fourth in the SAL Southern, 2.0 games behind Augusta (15-8).
Intimidating Starters: Jefferson Olacio, 19, makes his fifth start of the season following his first win in 2013. He is coming off his season-high four strikeouts while limiting Rome to two runs on four hits over 5.0 innings on April 24. Olacio opened the year with three consecutive losses, including a quality start on April 18 at Augusta. Baseball America rated him the No. 30 Prospect in the White Sox system. He split 2012 between Kannapolis and Advanced Rookie Bristol, going 3-11 with a 5.16 ERA in 27 appearances (17 starts). He led Bristol in starts (12) and tied for seventh in the Appalachian League with 55 strikeouts.
Charleston's Chucker: Vicente Campos, 20, looks for his first decision in his fifth start of the season. He has worked just 3.0 innings in each of his first four outings. The Venezuelan native spent last season with Charleston, going 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA in five starts. He pitched for Cleveland's AZL Indians in 2009 and, after missing the 2010 campaign, made 14 starts for Short-Season Everett (Mariners) in 2011, going 5-5 with a 2.32 ERA.
About Last Night: Kannapolis starting pitcher Jake Cose shut out the RiverDogs over seven 1-hit innings, but Charleston took advantage of two Braulio Ortiz walks and wild pitches in the bottom of the eighth en route to a 1-0 win on Sunday. Taylor Dugas walked, stolen second and used the pair of wild pitches to score the game's only run. Starter Gabe Encinas tossed six scoreless innings for Charleston in a no decision.
Bouncing Back on the Bump: One night after giving up season highs in runs (15) and hits (16), the Intimidators held Charleston scoreless over the first seven innings and limited them to a season-low one hit. Kannapolis threw its first team 1-hitter since Blair Walters and Bryan Blough combined to 1-hit Lexington in a 5-0 Intimidators win May 17, 2012.
Cose, but no cigar: Jake Cose took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on Sunday before Jake Cave broke up the no-no two outs into the inning. He finished with seven scoreless innings, combining with reliever Braulio Ortiz for a 1-hitter, the fewest hits Kannapolis has allowed this season. Cose is holding opposing hitters to a .236 average this season. The White Sox picked him in the 27th round in the June 2011 draft out of San Joaquin Delta (Calif.) Junior College where he served as a corner infielder until the 2011 season when took on the role of closer.
Kiser Rolls: Kale Kiser went 2-3 on Sunday, his second straight multi-hit game of the season (fifth of the year). On Saturday, he led off the third inning with his first home run of the year and finished 2-4 with 2 runs scored against the RiverDogs. He opened 2013 as arguably the SAL's best hitter, batting .526 (10-19) with 11 RBI in his first six games. Kiser is tied for the SAL lead with three sacrifice flies this season.
Micah Moving: Leadoff man Micah Johnson was caught stealing for the just the fourth time this year on Sunday, going 0-1 in his attempt to add to his Minor League-leading total. He swiped his 20th base of the season on Saturday, leading all Minor League Baseball. Johnson's run scored in the first inning Saturday gave him 19 on the year, tied for third in the league. He also leads the SAL with four triples, tied for fourth in all of Minor League Baseball.
Myles Ahead: Starting pitcher Myles Jaye continues to rank among SAL leaders in several categories. Through five starts, Jaye (3-0, 0.90) ranks first in innings pitch (30.0), tied for first in wins and winning percentage, second in ERA, second in total batters faced (121) and tied for seventh in strikeouts (25). The White Sox acquired him, along with fellow prospect RHP Daniel Webb, in a January 2012 trade for Major League pitcher Jason Frasor.
Sweet Relief: Adam Lopez struck out five batters over 3.0 relief innings on Saturday, upping his season total to 23 strikeouts, tied for second on the team. Lopez ranks fourth in the SAL in strikeouts per 9 IP for relievers at 14.79 (23 SO/14 IP).
