Asheville Tourists News Release

Asheville, NC--The Tourists extended the nation's longest winning streak to nine straight after sweeping a double-header against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday afternoon. No team in all of professional baseball has an active winning streak that stretches as long as Asheville's.

The series continued its offensive trend in both games. Asheville led from start to finish in game one, winning 11-6 in the seven inning affair. The Tourists jumped out to a 5-0 lead aft launching three Home Runs in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Wessinger led off with a Home Run while Derek Jones and Matt Argyropoulos hit back-to-back Home Runs over the 42-foot scoreboard in right center.

With a 7-1 lead, Lakewood attempted a comeback bid by scoring two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. After cutting the Tourists lead to just one, the home team rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Jones and Rosell Herrera each connected with two-run doubles which provided plenty of insurance.

In game two, it was the visitors who jumped out to an early lead. Lakewood led 6-1 after the top of the third inning, but the Tourists responded in a big way. Asheville scored the next eight runs of the game and held on to with 10-8. Asheville stole nine bases in game two. Herrera and Murphy both went deep in the comeback effort and Jonathan Vargas earned his first win of the season by pitching five frames.

David Dahl, made his McCormick Field debut Monday and combined to go 2-for-7 in the two games. Dahl scored three runs and doubled in a run while playing centerfield and batting second in both contests.

The Tourists finished their homestand 6-0 and begin a seven-game road trip on Wednesday. The Tourists are slated to face the Northern and Southern division's first place teams, Hickory and Augusta, on the road trip.
