THE LEAD OFF: Solid pitching by Austin Coley and a couple big innings propelled West Virginia to its third straight win, a 7-2 victory over the Lexington Legends on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. For the third time in 2015, Coley went five innings and earned the victory. The 22-year-old right hander struck out a career-best six and is now 3-0 in 2015. Offensively, the Power scored four runs in the third thanks to Jordan Luplow's hit by pitch with the bases loaded, a two-run single by Taylor Gushue and an RBI fielder's choice from Elvis Escobar. In the fourth, the Power tallied three more runs on a two-run double by Pablo Reyes and Luplow's second double of the game.
DISRESPECTING LEGENDS: The Power have played the Legends more than any other team since the start of the 2005 season and hold a 103-96 series advantage. West Virginia and Lexington meet a total of 16 times this season with the Power leading the season series 5-1. After the weekend games, the Power will not see the Royals' Class-A affiliate until mid-August in Kentucky.
HOME SWEET HOME: Appalachian Power Park has favored West Virginia in the early stages of the 2015 season as the Power hold a 7-2 record at home, the fastest start in franchise history. Comparatively, the 2014 Power club won a total of seven games in the entire first half at Appalachian Power Park. The seven home wins this season are tied for first in the South Atlantic League with the Delmarva Shorebirds, who also spot a 7-2 mark.
THE TOWER OF POWER: Jerrick Suiter's single to shallow center field in game one of Thursday's doubleheader provided West Virginia with its second walkoff victory of 2015. Coincidentially, Suiter delivered both of the Power's walkoffs in 2015. His first walkoff came on Opening Day when he grounded into a fielder's choice. Suiter's also the leading hitter on West Virginia's roster and is batting .333 this season, the ninth highest in the South Atlantic League. Additionally, his team-high ten RBIs are tied for fourth most in the league.
HOLY COLEY: RHP Austin Coley earned his third win of 2015 on Friday after hurling five shutout innings against the Lexington Legends. In the process, Coley lowered his ERA to 1.80 which ranks fifth in the league. Coley also ranks among the league leaders in wins (3, T-1st), WHIP (0.73, 2nd) and BAA (.173, 5th),
I'M COUNTING ON YOU: Elvis Escobar went 1-for-4 with an infield single in the second in last night's victory and is currently riding a seven-game hit streak, tied for the team lead with Cole Tucker. Escobar currently holds the longest active on-base streak for West Virginia at 11 games, tied with Chase Simpson's team-high.
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY: The Power aim to continue their early success against teams from the Southern Division. Eight of West Virginia's ten victories in 2015 have been against teams out of the division including five wins against the Legends. The other three victories came against the Savannah Sand Gnats to open the season.
