Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Thanks to a big offensive night from Mike Meyers and a terrific start from Michael Kopech, the Greenville Drive (10-7) took down the Asheville Tourists (7-10) 4-3 on Saturday at Fluor Field to clinch a victory of the five-game series.
Following a leadoff walk to Derek Miller in the bottom of the first, Meyers launched a two-run homer over the Green Monster, his first of the season, to put the Drive up 2-0.
The Drive scored twice more against Asheville starter Carlos Polanco (0-3), and Meyers was in the middle of it again, lacing an RBI single to right in the fourth for his third RBI of the night. Jordan Procyshen added an RBI single of his own in the fifth to cap the Drive's scoring.
Kopech (1-1) was the beneficiary of the early runs, although he was outstanding on his own en route to his first professional victory. For the second consecutive start, he hurled five shutout innings and allowed only two hits without issuing a walk. He struck out three Asheville hitters on the night.
The Tourists made a valiant comeback effort in the final three innings before falling just short. Sean Dwyer hit an RBI single in the seventh, while an RBI fielder's choice and a Drive error in the eighth cut the lead to 4-3.
Chandler Shepherd left the bases loaded in the eighth by getting Forrest Wall to foul out to third, and it was déja vu all over again in the ninth, as Asheville loaded the bases with two outs, but Shepherd recorded his first save of the year by coaxing Drew Weeks to fly out to right to end the game.
Meyers finished the night 3-4 with the homer and three RBI, while Michael Chavis and Javier Guerra joined him with multi-hit evenings. Dwyer had three hits to lead Asheville's offense, and Weeks and Emerson Jimenez chipped in with two apiece.
The series finale begins at 4:05 PM on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field. RH Ty Buttrey (1-0, 3.60) takes the ball for the Drive for the fourth time this season, and the Tourists will start LH Sam Howard (0-2, 6.43).
