Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

HICKORY, N.C. (April 25, 2015) - Manager Tommy Thompson's ejection couldn't stop Kannapolis from rallying in the sixth inning en route to a 4-3 win in Hickory on Saturday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Intimidators (7-9) plated three runs in the frame to take the lead and held on late to beat the Crawdads for the first time in this series.

With Hickory (12-4) ahead 1-0, Michael Suiter and Chris Curley opened the sixth with base hits, setting up Zach Fish for a game-tying single. Fish drove a base hit to left field, and Crawdads outfielder Eduard Pinto threw a bullet home where Michael Suiter appeared to slide under the tag of catcher Jose Trevino. Plate umpire Jacob Metz called Suiter out and ejected Thompson for questioning the call. Two nights earlier, Metz ejected two Intimidators players and one coach for arguing balls and strikes late in the game.

The ejection did little to quiet Kannapolis as Mason Robbins responded with an RBI-double to tie the game, 1-1. Toby Thomas put Kannapolis up with an RBI-groundout, scoring Fish, and Robbins scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 advantage.

In the seventh inning, Eddy Alvarez - who won an Olympic silver medal in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi in short-track speed skating - blasted his first home run (1) to right field for a 4-2 lead.

David Trexler came on to work the final 3.0 innings for the Intimidators, securing the save (1) by limiting Hickory to one run on one hit with two walks and a strikeout.

Kannapolis starting pitcher Thad Lowry matched his career-high of six strikeouts over 6.0 innings of work. The 20-year-old Texas allowed just two runs on four hits, including a pair of solo home runs, while walking just one batter. Lowry (3-0) earned his third straight win to open the 2015 campaign.

Hickory struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Tripp Martin launched a 2-out solo home run (4) to left field for a 1-0 lead. Jose Trevino added a home run (5) in the sixth inning.

Crawdads starting pitcher Brett Martin took no decision after leaving in line for the win. He spun 5.0 scoreless innings, limiting the Intimidators to three hits while striking out five and walking one. Kannapolis plated four runs against Hickory reliever Nick Gardewine over the sixth and seventh innings.

The Intimidators will play for a series split in Hickory on Sunday at 5 p.m. when RHP Luis Martinez (0-1, 4.15) takes the ball for Kannapolis against Crawdads' RHP Colin Wiles (2-0, 0.00). The Intimidators return home to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for a 7-game home stand against the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) and Rome Braves (Atlanta Braves) starting Tuesday, April 28.
