Saskatoon Blades News Release

Brandon, MB - The Saskatoon Blades defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 2-1 in their ninth one-goal game of the season on Friday night at Westoba Place. The win improves Saskatoon's record to (5-3-0-1) and extends their point streak to five games (4-0-0-1).

The Wheaties hobbled out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period as Cole Reinhardt scored his first goal of the season by banking a shot off Saskatoon defender Majid Kaddoura. Fortuitously for Brandon, the puck then bounced into the crease amongst the chaos in front of Nolan Maier and snuck into the back of the net.

Their lead did not sustain however, as Eric Florchuk was set up beautifully in the slot by Tristen Robins to score his first goal of the season. Robins stripped the puck from Brandon behind the net before backhanding it off to Florchuk right out in front where he was able to score from point blank range.

The scores remained locked at 1-1 through the remainder of the first period and all of the second period, with the shots also locked at 23 apiece heading into the final frame.

Maier made several key saves amongst his total of 36 for the night - albeit none bigger than a glove block on a Jonny Hooker one-timer early in the third period that may have saved the game for the Blades.

Repaying Maier's heroics, Riley Mckay & Chase Wouters teamed up once again to deliver Saskatoon the victory. Playing short-handed, McKay drove up the left wing and fought off his man at the circle. There, he flipped the biscuit with a backhand pass to Wouters who streamed down into the slot and snapped in the eventual game winner - his third goal of the season.

Wouters & Maier were honoured as 1st and 3rd Star, respectively, during the post-game ceremony.

The Blades are back in action immediately against the Lethbridge Hurricanes at home on Saturday October 12th for Nutrien Country Harvest Night.
