Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Trent Woodward's solo home run in the 13th inning Tuesday night sent Corpus Christi to its eighth consecutive win, a 2-1 triumph over the Missions at Wolff Stadium.
As a severe thunderstorm was approaching the ballpark, Woodward stepped to the plate with one out in the 13th. He belted a 2-1 pitch from Rafael De Paula (0-1) over the fence in right field for Corpus Christi's first run in eight innings. Woodward's first Double-A blast also snapped an 0-for-24 slump.
San Antonio (12-25) battled back with three successive singles against Brendan McCurry in the home half. Nick Schulz tried to score from second on a Nelson Ward liner to center but was gunned down at home plate by Teoscar Hernandez. Following the outfield assist, McCurry struck out Gabriel Quintana to end the ballgame. He is now tied for the Texas League lead with six saves.
Luis Diaz kept Corpus Christi (22-15) off the scoreboard until the fifth. Roberto Pena singled to right and Chan-Jong Moon dragged a bunt base hit down the first-base line to begin the inning. Hernandez executed a sac bunt, allowing Pena to score on Alex Bregman's RBI groundout.
Hooks starter Francis Martes hurled five innings of one-run ball, striking out five against four singles. Martes threw 46 of 70 pitches for strikes.
Angel Heredia, making his Double-A debut, fanned four over three scoreless innings of relief. Aaron West (1-0) earned the victory with three more shutout frames.
Corpus Christi pitchers struck out 12 and walked one on the night. The lone free pass, coaxed by Ryan Miller in the sixth, rendered the only Missions run. Rehabbing San Diego Padre Alexi Amarista accounted for the RBI with a seeing-eye single thru the right side.
The Hooks have permitted only four runs in the last 42 innings, a span of five contests.
The Missions send Bryan Rodriguez (2-2, 2.97) to the hill in Wednesday's 11:05 a.m. tilt. Corpus Christi counters with Cy Sneed (1-1, 3.42). The game can be heard online at cchooks.com and in the Coastal Bend on 1400 AM KUNO.
