San Antonio Missions News Release

A solo homer by Trent Woodward in the top of the 13th helped Corpus Christi outlast San Antonio 2-1 Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.

Tuesday featured a classic Wolff pitcher's duel, with San Antonio's Luis Diaz pitted against fellow right-hander Francis Martes.

In six and two-thirds innings, Diaz allowed just one run on six hits and three walks, while fanning four. The Hooks lone run off the powerful right-hander came in the fifth on an Alex Bregman RBI groundout. Diaz threw 65 of his 102 pitches for strikes.

Martes kept the Missions off the board through five. However, in the bottom of the sixth, San Antonio finally scratched out a run. Catcher Ryan Miller led off the inning with a walk and promptly moved to second when Martes uncorked a wild pitch. After a Nelson Ward groundout moved Miller to third, the Missions tied the game when San Diego rehabber Alexi Amarista singled to right. Amarista, who joined the club earlier in the day, finished 2-for-5.

The game then became a battle of bullpens into extras, the third time in five games during the homestand that San Antonio had a game go past regulation.

In the top of the 13th, Woodward broke the tie when he connected on a 2-1 pitch from Rafael De Paula (0-1) and drove it over the wall in right.

The Missions nearly extended the game in the bottom of the 13th on a Nelson Ward single, but Nick Schulz was gunned out at home by center fielder Teoscar Hernandez. Brendan McCurry (sixth save) struck out next batter, Gabriel Quintana to end the game of three hours and forty-seven minutes. Aaron West (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Hooks.

San Antonio (12-25) resumes its four-game series against Corpus Christi (22-15) Wednesday with a special 11:05 AM start. RH Bryan Rodriguez (2-2, 3.97) will get the ball for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with RH Cy Sneed (1-1, 3.42).

Notes: Amarista was placed on the DL on April 23 (retroactive to April 20) with a right hamstring strain. Prior to his injury, Amarista was hitting .333 (7-for-21) with two RBI, two runs, four walks and two steals in eight games for the Padres. San Diego acquired Amarista along with former Mission RHP Donn Roach in exchange for RHP Ernesto Frieri (another former SA hurler) on May 3, 2012. In 549 career ML games, Amarista is hitting .229 (335-for-1463) with 55 doubles, 16 triples, 18 homers, 141 RBI, 31 steals and a 142 runs scored.
