Woodpeckers' Offense Blanketed by Wood Ducks in Opener

Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (8-7) struggled to get much going on the offensive end Tuesday night, being held to just four hits and falling in the series opener to the Down East Wood Ducks (7-8) 8-1 at Segra Stadium.
Down East never surrendered the lead once Andrew Taylor (L, 1-1) gave up a solo home run to Ian Moller in the top of the first inning. It was the only run Taylor allowed over 3.1 innings of work, thanks in part to Bryan Perez, who inherited two runners in the fourth inning and struck out consecutive hitters to escape the jam.
Michael Knorr entered from the bullpen in the fifth inning and retired the side in order, but proceeded to allow a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings. One more run crossed in the eighth, as Knorr finished with 3.1 innings of work and struck out three.
Marshall Hunt pitched in the ninth and allowed a two-run double to Danyer Cueva before closing the inning.
Joseph Montalvo kept the Fayetteville offense in check for most of the night, tossing six scoreless innings and striking out six in a quality start.
Fayetteville was nearly shutout, but broke up the bid with two outs in the ninth inning. With Sandro Gaston standing on second base, Luis Encarnacion popped a ball into right field that was dropped by Abimelec Ortiz and allowed Gaston to score. After Dauri Lorenzo singled to extend the ninth, Seth Clark coaxed a groundout from Leosdany Molina to end the game.
The six-game series continues with a quick turnaround on Wednesday as the Woodpeckers host Education Day at the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM. Fayetteville will start RHP Jose Fleury (0-0, 1.54 ERA) and the Wood Ducks will counter with RHP Josh Genner (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
