Woodies Sweep Woodpeckers With Third Straight Last-At-Bat Win

Kinston, N.C. - The Down East Wood Ducks scored two runs in the eighth inning, to break a 2-2 tie, on their way to a third consecutive last-at-bat victory, to sweep the series from Fayetteville, with a 4-2 final, Sunday.

The victory for Down East (16-8) is their sixth comeback win of the season, and the sweep is their third of the year, having already taken a three game set from Myrtle Beach, and Salem.

Fayetteville (13-11) struck first in the top of the first inning. Corey Julks singled up the middle, and then with two outs and Julks at third, Colton Shaver plated him with a line drive through the left side to make it 1-0.

It was the only run Jason Bahr would allow on the afternoon. He would work six innings, giving up a run on three hits, he struck out five, and did not walk a batter. Bahr at one point retired 12 in a row, but did not factor in the decision.

Fayetteville starter J.P. France held the Woodies in check early, going 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, he gave up three walks, and struck out six.

The Woodies would take the lead in the sixth against Hunter Martin. Leody Taveras reached on a one-out single, and Anderson Tejeda followed with a walk. Diosbel Arias then singled to right, but Taveras was thrown out at the plate for the second out. One batter later, Ryan Dorow would come through, grounding a single through the right side to score a pair, and put the Woodies on top, 2-1.

After Sal Mendez worked a scoreless seventh, Peter Fairbanks (win, 1-0) came on for the eighth, and gave up back-to-back doubles to Alfredo Angarita and Bryan De La Cruz to tie the score at 2-2.

The Woodies responded in the home eighth. Arias led off with a single against Leovanny Rodriguez (loss, 1-2), stole second, and advanced to third on the play on a low throw. Dorow then walked, and with runners at the corners Yanio Perez lifted a sac fly to left to score Arias, and make it a 3-2 ballgame. Yohel Pozo would follow with a single down the first base line to plate Dorow, and widen the margin to 4-2.

Demarcus Evans (save, 3), walked the leadoff man, but bounced back to pick up a strikeout, and then got Jonathan Arauz to ground into a double play to end the game.

The Wood Ducks hit the road tomorrow for a four game series in Myrtle Beach. Right-hander Tyler Phillips (1-1, 1.46) will make the start for the Woodies, opposed by Pelicans lefty Bryan Hudson (1-1, 4.43). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio apps.
