Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - John King was tremendous for the Wood Ducks, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings, but Down East was unable to come through with men on base, falling 3-1, in front of 2,353 at Grainger Stadium, Saturday.
The Wood Ducks (29-14) have now equaled their season-worst three losses in a row, and have combined to score just three runs over the last three ballgames.
King was excellent in his second Carolina League start. He faced just one over the minimum in seven innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits, both singles to Nick Madrigal, struck out eight, and did not walk a batter. King retired the final 11 men he faced in the ballgame.
The lone run he gave up came in the fourth, when Madrigal led off with a single, moved to second on an errant pickoff throw, to third on a stolen base, and came into score on a sac fly from Steele Walker, one batter later.
The Woodies drew even at 1-1 in the fifth. Yanio Perez led off the inning against John Parke with a triple off the wall in left-center. Two batters later, Yonny Hernandez smacked an RBI single to left, to even the score, one of his three hits in the ballgame. Yohel Pozo also enjoyed a three-hit night at the plate.
Parke was outstanding as well, as he worked six innings, allowing just one run on five hits, did not walk a batter, and stuck out two.
In the bottom of the seventh the Woodies loaded the bases, with three singles against Codi Heuer (win, 2-0), but then with two outs, Anderson Tejeda lined a rocket right back to Heuer, and the pitcher was able to make the catch for the final out of the inning.
Then in the top of the eighth the Dash (21-20) took the lead against Alex Eubanks (loss, 3-1). Carlos Perez led off with a single to left, and then Craig Dedelow reached on a throwing error from Eubanks that put two in scoring position. Two batters later JJ Muno came through with a double down the left field line to put the Dash back in front, 3-1.
The Woodies tallied ten hits in the ballgame but were held to just one run, going 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, stranding nine on base.
Down East will look to salvage the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they send lefty Sal Mendez (1-0, 3.00) to the hill to face off with Dash lefty Konnor Pilkington (0-1, 13.50). It's Sunday Funday presented by Cricket Wireless, featuring pregame autographs and postgame kids run the bases at Grainger Stadium. The broadcast will begin at 12:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com and on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
