Woodchucks drop third straight, lose to Bucks 3—2

WAUSAU - Sean Borman hit a monstrous homerun in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie, propelling the Waterloo Bucks to victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the first of a three-game series at Athletic Park.

Starting pitchers Jordan Luvisi and Derek Lamacchia each turned in quality starts, sending a 2-1 Waterloo lead into the seventh inning.

The ‘Chucks were able to tie the game and produce a run off reliever Chris Dunn in the seventh frame, but quickly gave back the run on Borman's homerun in the eighth.

The Woodchucks, who won four consecutive games headed into the All-Star break, have lost three straight since play resumed, scoring only four total runs over the short swoon.

Wisconsin was outhit 11 to eight, but benefited from two Waterloo errors, had two runners thrown out at home, and stranded nine runners on base.

Waterloo stuck first off Wisconsin starter Jordan Luvisi, stringing together three singles and a walk to produce two runs in the top of the second inning.

Chris Migani and Thomas Lindauer each collected an RBI to give Waterloo an early lead for starter Derek Lamacchia, who offered plenty of scoring chances to the ‘Chucks in the early going, but allowed little damage in the way of runs scored.

Wisconsin had runners on the corners with out in the first inning, only to have Seth Batty - who was on third - get caught up in a rundown on a groundball to third base. The ‘Chucks were also unable to score in the second and third innings, after they placed two runners on base in the second with consecutive two-out singles, and led off the third with a triple.

The ‘Chucks finally broke through with a run off Lamacchia in the fourth frame, although more timely Waterloo fielding curtailed the would-be big inning.

Cody Regis led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second base as Robbie De La Cruz walked. As Garrett Yrigoyen continued and hit a groundball, Regis was thrown out at home as catcher Jeremy Lucas recovered an errant throw and made the flip to the covering pitcher Lamacchia. Brian Carroll followed with an RBI single to score De La Cruz and move Yrigoyen to third, before a double-steal attempt just barely failed and Yrigoyen was called out on a close play at home.

As Lamaccia settled down and worked through the fifth and sixth while facing the minimum, Jordan Luvisi lived dangerously, but tightened up after the second inning, allowing no more runs through the remainder of his 6 2/3 inning outing.

After allowing two runs in the second, Luvisi allowed a runner into scoring position over the next three frames, but got the job done - notching his second quality start of the season - allowing nine hits and one walk, striking out two.

Inheriting a 2-1 lead headed to the ‘Chucks half of the seventh, Chris Dunn replaced Derek Lamacchia - who allowed one run, seven hits and two walks through six innings - and relinquished the lead by way of an unearned run, when Garrett Yrigoyen scored on a Seth Batty sacrifice fly.

Waterloo responded, however, in the following frame, as Sean Borman absolutely crushed a solo two-out homerun to right field off Woodchuck reliever Justin Burns, giving the Bucks a 3-2 advantage.

Borman's homer would be enough, as Brett Andrzejewski, who made his Waterloo debut Friday night, recording the final six outs while allowing only one runner to reach base, recording the save. Dunn, however, took the win, as he began the eighth inning and allowed Jamie Bruno to reach on an error, before exiting - improving to 4-3.

Waterloo improved to 9-4 and remained in first place, while Wisconsin fell back to .500 at 7-7.

The ‘Chucks and Bucks will meet again Saturday for game two of a three-game home series, as Aaron Gates (0-0) takes on Shane Broyles (2-3) Woodchucks Baseball Giveaway Night.
