Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - Jason Bahr delivered a dominating performance on top of a night of offense from the Wood Ducks (23-38, 58-73) that shattered team records in a 16-0 win over the Pelicans (24-37, 58-73). The right-hander turned in his first quality start with the Rangers and only allowed one hit with six strikeouts.
Bahr did not allow his first hit until the fifth inning but still finished his night only facing one over the minimum. Over his last three starts (16 innings), Bahr has only allowed one run (0.56 ERA) in that span.
The offense's record-breaking night was contained into three innings. In the first, the DEWDs scored three runs thanks to a bases loaded walk from Yanio Perez, a sac fly from Ricky Valencia, and an RBI single by Alex Kowalczyk.
The trio of runs that scored (LeDarious Clark, Anderson Tejeda, and Andretty Cordero) would score again in the fifth in a big five-run frame. Down East chased Myrtle Beach starter from the game with a pair of two-run homers - one from Cordero and the other from Kowalczyk.
With the Woodies ahead 8-0, Kaleb Fontenot entered for the seventh and left two runners on base and began a strong stretch to close out the game. He had to wait nearly an hour between the eighth and ninth innings because of an incredulous bottom of the eighth.
Tyler Peyton struggled to find the zone after a leadoff single to Brendon Davis. He walked two and allowed a two-run double to Cordero. He still managed the second out of the inning by Yanio Perez before he was pulled with 32 pitches.
Then the insanity. With Myrtle Beach out of pitching, they turned to backup catcher Tyler Pearson - and he also had his struggles with Mark Bass' strike zone. He would walk a batter to load the bases, but then Aramis Ademan committed a fielding error at short to bring in a run and extend the inning.
That's when the wheels fell off. He walked Josh Altmann with the bases loaded to score a run and make it 12-0 DEWDs. An RBI single by Davis was followed by a two-run single by Taveras, and one more walk made it 15-0 Woodies. One again, the Pelicans went to the bullpen, but actually right field for Roberto Caro to come in and pitch.
He issued one more bases-loaded walk to set the score at 16-0. For good measure, Fontenot struck out the side in the ninth and earned the "bullpen save" (at least 3IP, and finished the game) in a 16-0 final.
The game set records for largest margin of victory, largest margin of victory in a shutout, most runs in an inning (eight), and most batters in an inning (14). They matched the team record of 16 runs scored set earlier this season as well.
Down East has won back-to-back series for the first time in the second half. They have won five games in a row and look to match their season long winning streak on Sunday with lefty Tyler Thomas on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Grainger Stadium.
