Crownover Tosses No-Hitter for Potomac as Hillcats Fall 7-0
August 25, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Woodbridge, Va. - For the ninth time in franchise history, the Lynchburg Hillcats were no-hit, falling 7-0 on Saturday at the hands of Potomac Nationals starter Matthew Crownover (Win, 5-8).
Lynchburg (65-62, 36-24) was no-hit for the first time since August 20, 2015, when Mikey O'Brien accomplished the feat in a seven-inning contest with the Frederick Keys. Prior to Saturday, the last time the Hillcats were held hitless in a nine-inning game was on May 2, 2000, when Brian Sanches fired a no-no for the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
Crownover's no-hitter was the first in the Carolina League since Shao-Ching Chiang did so for the Hillcats on July 29, 2017, in a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem. It was also the first in Potomac Nationals franchise history.
Crownover walked three and hit a batter, as just four Hillcats reached base on the night. He threw 110 pitches and picked up three strikeouts, getting Gavin Collins to pop out to second base to cap off the historic night.
Potomac (68-58, 31-28) started the scoring in the first inning. Bryan Mejia led off the frame with walk, and Luis Garcia singled. Mejia then advanced to third on a fly out to center field by Ian Sagdal. Later in the inning, with Andruw Monasterio batting, Zach Plesac (Loss, 8-5) uncorked a wild pitch. Mejia scored easily from third, while Garcia scored all the way from first after Collins had difficulty retrieving the ball, and was charged with an error.
The P-Nats added to their lead in the third inning. Mejia singled, stole second base, and then scored on a Garcia RBI single to push Potomac's lead to 3-0.
In the sixth, the Nationals added some insurance. Rhett Wiseman worked a lead off walk against Leandro Linares, and stole second base. Later in the frame with two outs, Telmito Agustin lined an RBI double to right field, scoring Wiseman for a 4-0 lead.
Potomac put the game out of reach with a three-run eighth inning. Wiseman hit an RBI double and Nick Banks drilled a two-run single.
Plesac logged six innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Linares allowed a run and walked two in 0.2 innings, and Micah Miniard surrendered three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Hillcats look to salvage one game in the series finale on Sunday. Right-hander Justin Garza (4-6, 3.64) will toe the slab for Lynchburg, against righty Jackson Tetreault (0-1, 6.97) of Potomac. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
Max Gun and Matt Present get you set with pre-game coverage beginning at 12:55 p.m. on TuneIn Radio and the Radio434 app.
The Hillcats will return home for the final homestand of the regular season Monday through Thursday at City Stadium against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Thursday will be Fan Appreciation Day at the ballpark, featuring a patriotic hat giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, courtesy of Foster Fuels and KD Country. Fans will be treated to various giveaways and concessions deals throughout the game and the night will be capped off with the final post-game fireworks display of the season, presented by Central Virginia Federal Credit Union.
Fan Appreciation Night will also be the final Thirsty Thursday at City Stadium in 2018, featuring $2 Miller Lite and Yuengling drafts.
