'Wolves Take Series from Sea Dogs with 6-4 Win

The SeaWolves, aided by defensive miscues, won the rubber game of the series against the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park 6-4.

Portland struck first in the top of the first inning against Erie starter Brooks Brown. Jeremy Hazelbaker led off with a single and stole second. He scored on a Tony Thomas base hit for a 1-0 Sea Dogs lead.

In the second, Portland went ahead 2-0. Reynaldo Rodriguez singled and moved to second on a Oscar Tejeda base hit. The runners advanced on a Jon Hee groundout and Rodriguez scored on a Vladimir Frias sacrifice fly.

Portland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Alex Hassan connected on a two-out, solo home run off of Brown.

The 'Wolves responded in the bottom of the fourth against Portland starter Alex Wilson. Michael Bertram and C.J. Retherford led off with consecutive singles. Wilson retired the next two before walking Jamie Johnson, loading the bases for Brandon Douglas. Douglas worked a full count and draw a walk, scoring Bertram making it 3-1. Francisco Martienz followed with a single to center, plating Retherford, Johnson and eventually Douglas on an error giving Erie a 4-3 edge.

Erie remained in the lead until the top of the seventh. The Sea Dogs loaded the bases against reliever Luis Marte on singles from Frias and Hazelbaker and a Chic-Hsien Chaing walk. With two outs, Marte balked home Frias, tying the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the eighth, Martinez led off with a single for his third hit of the game. It was the third consecutive three-hit game for Martinez. Rawley Bishop followed and laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the play, the throw from reliever Eammon Portice was misplayed by the second baseman Tejeda. The throw went into right field and Martinez came all the way around from first to score the go-ahead run. On the same, play, catcher Tim Federowicz errantly threw to center attempting to get Bishop at second, Bishop would come home to score for a 6-4 Erie edge.

Austin Wood earned his second save striking out the side in the ninth.

Rob Waite (3-2) picked up the win tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

The 'Wolves continue their six-game homestand on Friday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays).7:05 First Pitch. Lefty Jay Voss (2-2, 4.37 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Robert Ray (0-1, 7.71 ERA).
