'Wolves Score Three In The Ninth for sixth straight win
August 26, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves proved on Tuesday night that the 27th and final out, is often the hardest to get as they scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up their sixth consecutive win in a 4-3 win over the Harrisburg Senators.
The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning against Harrisburg starter Bobby Brownlie. Casper Wells led off the inning with a single and he stole second. With one out, Wells was grounded over to third by Ryan Roberson and he scored on a Jeff Frazier double, giving Erie a 1-0 lead.
Erie held the lead until the top of the sixth inning when Harrisburg struck back against Erie starter Guillermo Moscoso. Javi Herrera led off the inning and reached second base on an error when Santo De Leon overthrew the first baseman Roberson. Edgardo Baez doubled home Herrera, tying the game at 1-1. Garrett Guzman then followed with an RBI double, scoring Baez, putting the Senators ahead 2-1. Moscoso retired the next two hitters but walked Ofilio Castro with two outs and that would be the final hitter he would face. Reliever Scott Drucker allowed a single to Marvin Lowrance, scoring Guzman, putting Harrisburg ahead 3-1.
Trailing by a pair of runs in the eighth, Will Rhymes, who earlier singled to extend his season-best hitting streak to 11-straight games, led off with a walk. James Skelton singled to put the tying runs on base but the Senators then retired the final three batters of the inning as the âWolves left the tying runs on.
Erie then went into the ninth inning against reliever Steve Schmoll down by two. Frazier led off with a single up the middle for his second hit of the game. Pedro Cotto followed with a single to left to again put the tying runs on base. De Leon successfully sacrificed the runners into scoring position on a bunt to bring up Caonabo Cosme. Cosme sent a liner to the second baseman Seth Bynum for the second out. Rhymes then stepped in and lined a double down the right field line, passed a diving Bill Rhinehart at first, bringing home the tying runs. On the play, an error in right by Baez allowed Rhymes to reach third. That brought up Skelton who sent a liner to right-center, scoring Rhymes, giving Erie a 4-3 come from behind victory.
Josh Kite (3-0) picked up the win as he worked a scoreless top of the ninth.
Mocoso took his second-straight no-decision going 5.2 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
The win was Erie's sixth win when trailing after six innings and the fourth when trailing after eight. It was the second time in the last week that Erie scored either the game tying or game winning run with two outs in the ninth.
With two hits in the game, Rhymes now has extended his league lead to 158 knocks on the season. He ranks second all-time in SeaWolves history, five behind Omar Infante's mark of 163 hits which was set in 2001.
